Mercedes /8 modernized
Subscriptions & booklets

David Obendorfer has a modern variant of the M ercedes /8 designed. The virtual study based on the E-Class is called Icon E Concept and is not the designer's first work: Obendorfer has already redesigned Fiat 127, VW T1 and BMW CS. Now the designer is showing a new interpretation of the Mercedes /8 with his Mercedes-Benz Icon E Concept. Obendorfer adopted elements of the series presented in 1968, such as the vertical headlights, as well as the shape of the sheet metal hubcaps or the chrome ring on the steering wheel.

As long, high and wide as a current E-Class

Homage to Bracq and Sacco

David Obendorfer
Obendorfer sees the Icon E as an homage.

Obendorfer takes liberties with the line: The horizontal body fold that runs from the front fenders around the body of the /8 becomes a line sloping slightly backwards and instead of the slightly sloping rear, the reinterpretation has a slight wedge shape . The headlights are at an angle and the bumpers clearly show what has changed in body construction since 1968: Instead of screwing chrome-plated sheet metal bumpers to the body, plastic bumpers are now almost seamlessly integrated into the body. This is also the case with Icon E. It should also be a homage: Paul Bracq, the designer in charge of the /8 and Bruno Sacco, who primarily shaped the Mercedes models of the 80s as head of design.

was Stroke-Eight the first million Mercedes

David Obendorfer
This is what the original looked like.

The /8, named after its year of publication 1968, was the first Mercedes, of which more than a million units were produced. The series is the direct forerunner of today's E-Class. The two series designations W 115 /W 114 come from the fact that four- and six-cylinder were originally intended to differ as much as the “small fin” and “large fin” of the predecessor series. It didn't come to that. Instead, customers had the opportunity to configure “their” /8 precisely: The options ranged from the 200D with 55 hp and the temperament of a VW 1200 'savings beetle' to the 185 hp 280E that ran 200 km /h and electric window regulators up to leather upholstery and air conditioning had everything that was also available in the S-Class; Including the more advanced rear axle, by the way.
