How to get an electric car cheaply

Up to 25% discount possible
Subscriptions & booklets

L ange it seemed as if nothing could shake the classic car market - its consistency was unique. But then came the emissions scandal, which turned all mobility in Germany upside down almost overnight and fueled the hope that the automotive industry would now focus on promoting e-mobility.

Yes Manufacturers are not yet consistently aligning themselves with the Stromer. At Audi, customers have so far only been able to register online in order to get one of the first e-trons. At Mercedes, still completely dependent on the combustion engine business, customers are not immediately made aware of the e-models when they visit the website. It doesn't look much different at BMW. Renault is one of the few exceptions: the French are submitting favorable leasing conditions for the electric Zoe on their website.

Such offers for e-cars are currently a little overlooked. The vehicles with an alternative drive are not made more palatable to customers than conventional models. Above all, discounts on the list price are intended to induce motorists to buy. As an auto motor und sport evaluation shows, the industry is investing a lot in this. The price advantages are approaching a level that the brands offer for models with combustion engines. For them, an average of 20 percent discount is currently possible, while e-cars are 16 percent. At the peak, customers can negotiate a discount of up to 25 percent for a Stromer.

These offers are not always just daily registrations that push discounts over the 20 percent mark. With some manufacturers, the trade uses the environmental bonus for customers with an old diesel. There are also various bonus systems, for example for those who switch from other brands or those who trade in a used vehicle. The environmental bonus for e-cars, shared by the manufacturer and the federal government, also drives discounts up. There are 4,000 euros for all-electric models and 3,000 euros for plug-in hybrids. Important: The list price without VAT must be less than 60,000 euros.

Use discounts and cheap financing

Despite the discounts, e-cars are still too expensive for most. Financing is an alternative. Since the lending rates are in the basement, they are now particularly worthwhile - especially if they can be combined with the environmental bonus and other discounts.

In this way, the 35,900 euro VW e-Golf can be leased over four years for 330 euro a month. Volkswagen is adding a ten percent discount to the subsidy, which results in a saving of 21 percent and makes a down payment superfluous. Similar degrees are also possible with other brands. With Nissan, for example, the customer can get the spacious and everyday Leaf for 286 euros a month, with Smart the Fortwo EQ for 174 euros. These examples show that e-vehicles are no longer much more expensive to finance than conventionally powered cars. A VW Golf 2.0 TDI Comfortline, for example, with all discounts and without a down payment, is just 90 euros a month cheaper than the E version.

Another saving effect is the vehicle batteries. Since they are among the most expensive items in e-cars, manufacturers often offer the battery with a rental agreement. Renault even practices this concept in all of its electric car models, and for good reason: With the Zoe small car, for example, private customers who drive less than 10,000 kilometers a year save more than 100 euros per month on battery rental. The vehicle industry is becoming more and more creative when it comes to making e-cars attractive.

Sample calculation: Renault Zoe battery rental - more than 100 euros difference per month

The calculation example for the Renault Zoe The 22 kWh battery illustrates that renting a battery is worthwhile: With a four-year installment loan including a discount and environmental bonus of 5,000 euros, customers pay more than 100 euros per month less than buying batteries. However, the advantage shrinks with the mileage: at 7,500 km per year the brand charges 59 euros per month in battery rental, from 10,000 km it is 69 euros and from 20,000 km even 109 euros.
