D ie good news for all fans of the VW T5: You will recognize your darling in the next generation too. VW retained both external and internal dimensions of the VW T6, which will be available from June. Not a bad plan, after all, thanks to the transverse engine and standard front-wheel drive, you use the space better than the recently enormously strengthened competition in the form of the Mercedes V-Class. This relies on longitudinal engines and rear-wheel drive. Thanks to its pronounced box shape, the VW can accommodate up to nine people over a length of 4.89 meters. Depending on the seat configuration and equipment line, there may be fewer who travel more comfortably than ever.

VW T6 for the first time with adaptive chassis

For the first time, the T is getting adaptive dampers that put an end to bumpiness which was particularly noticeable in the back rows. In the comfort position, short bumps and heels literally fizzle out and are processed into gently swaying movements. Chassis design means a lot of fine-tuning, explains Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler, Chief Development Officer, and refers to the new spring and damper settings. The hydraulic steering, however, remained unchanged, it enables a clean line. Even in the tight sport position of the adaptive dampers, the VW T6 remains a calculable buddy.

However, one who has dressed up properly. At least in the more noble equipment variants, piano lacquer and aluminum optics shine, supplemented by neatly fitted switches and new infotainment. The top system comes with a 6.3-inch touch screen. Depending on the version, the systems contain pretty much everything from Bluetooth coupling to app control on the smartphone via touchscreen and navigation with online services.

VW T6 offers numerous new assistance systems and motors

Also new: a whole arsenal of assistance systems. The radar-based Front Assist detects that the distance to the vehicle in front is too short and, if necessary, intervenes by jerking the brakes; the adaptive cruise control brakes to a standstill and even starts up again automatically within a certain period of time. The City Emergency Brake Assistant, on the other hand, detects obstacles at speeds below 30 km /h and brings the VW T6 to a standstill if necessary. The LED main headlights with automatic high-beam headlights provide good light, while the electric operation of the sliding doors and - now new - thethe large tailgate.

In addition to petrol engines, new two-liter TDIs take care of proper propulsion. They come from the current generation of cars, but have been modified for use in the T6. Thanks to urea injection, they meet the Euro 6 emissions standard, consume 14 percent less on average and do more, the new biturbo TDI even 204 hp. Like its weaker siblings, it unfolds its strength relatively early and gently. This is forwarded via a precise manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG. Noticeable: the acoustic restraint and the smooth running of the TDI.

Evolution instead of revolution in the new Bulli

Zu VW did not come up with a completely new T-model, instead improving the T5 at important points. And indeed: Appearance, driving comfort and assistance systems as well as the diesel engines are more modern and better than ever.
