The headroom for the occupants in the second row remains almost untouched: Compared to the predecessor, it is only two millimeters down. More good news from even further back: The trunk cutout has grown, the loading sill has sunk to a height of 77 centimeters, the opening button is now in the lid and the luggage compartment is 6 centimeters longer. The luggage volume has increased by 55 to 500 liters compared to its predecessor. The retractable rear spoiler, which is now much lower, helps here. This allowed the box for the extension mechanism, which is located on the inside of the trunk, to move backwards. The rear spoiler (Fig. 11) is a statement in itself: When fully extended, the turbo model offers 40 percent more space than the comparable predecessor variant and its dimensions are reminiscent of the wing of the 911 GT3.

At the front, the new Panamera shines with LED and four-point daytime running lights as standard, the latest generation of matrix LED light is available as an option for each headlight works with 84 pixels. With the Turbo, the PDLS (adaptation of the light distribution to the speed, dynamic and static cornering light) is standard, Matrix LED light is charged here at 1,059 euros.

The entire outer skin of the Panamera is made of aluminum, the load-bearing structures of high-strength steel. In a combination of roll hemming and gluing, aluminum and steel are joined together, the roll hemming seams are a total of 12.7 meters long. Nothing against the sum of the pure glued seams, which Porsche specifies as 147.73 meters. The weight saving of 50 kilograms achieved thanks to the lightweight construction is completely consumed by the additional equipment. The Panamera 4S weighs 1,870 kg (all specifications according to DIN), the Turbo weighs 1,995 kg and the 4S Diesel weighs 2,050 kg.

The new Panamera is based on the modular standard construction kit (MSB) of the VW group, which is also under the Bentley Bentayga and the Audi SQ7. The wheelbase of the Panamera has grown by 30 millimeters, the front axle moves forward by twelve millimeters, the rear axle backwards by 18 millimeters, while the entire car is still 5,049 millimeters long (width: 1,937 mm, height 4S /4S Diesel: 1,423 mm , Standard height of the turbo equipped with a variable air spring: 1,427 mm). A change to the rear doors is very noticeable: the tip of the window that protrudes far to the rear is gone. Further ahead, the exterior mirrors now sit with a double foot on the door sills.

The interior designers on the new Panamera have a thorough and good look Job done. Porsche has cleaned up the center console, which is controversial because of its many buttons. Now there are only a few direct dial buttons. They sit neatly hidden under glass. When pressed, a shaker called a 'shaker' gives the feeling of pressing a real mechanical button. For example, the settings for Porsche Stability Management (PSM) can be called up directly - Porsche assumes that the sporty Panamera drivers like to use these functions often and often. There are also two cup holders waiting for vessels on the wide center console. The bottom of the cup first presses down, so that in normal conditions a surface without holes can serve as an armrest. Of course, there is also a new steering wheel in the car and if the Sport Chrono Package, which is subject to a surcharge, is on board, this steering wheel also has a drive mode switch. There are optional massage seats and anew panorama glass roof available. Ambient light bathes the interior in different colors on request, a system from the US audio specialist Bose is used as standard for sound generation, and the finest Burmester sound from Berlin is available for an extra charge.

The interior mirror is, the general one Following the interior design trend, frameless and the center console is completed at the top by a wide and frameless 12.3-inch touchscreen. As always, the driver looks at a central mechanical tachometer, but to the right and left of it are now seven-inch screens, the displays of which can be configured in many ways. Panamera drivers don't even get a comfortable head-up display for a surcharge, even with the new model. According to Porsche, one has not yet been able to get used to the display options of such a display with regard to sporty vehicles. The rear end of the center console is also chic: if you order the four-zone air conditioning, you get a seamlessly fitted seven-inch screen.

When you first try out the seat, the unbuttoned interior inspires. The new center console simplifies operation thanks to a better overview and the tiny rotary push button above the gear selector lever enables worry-free surfing through the menus. In terms of the generous space available in the four-seater sedan, nothing has changed when the new model was converted. You immediately feel at home in the car and the new controls create confidence.

Of course, the Porsche Exclusive Manufactory also takes care of the new Panamera. The four-door is designed here entirely afterCustomer request. For example, tinted taillights, a sports exhaust system with black tailpipes, a SportDesign optics package, lettering painted in a contrasting color, door handles, air outlets and exterior mirror housings as well as various special wheels are available. For the interior, the specialists offer a rear seat entertainment system, extended leather upholstery, an embossed center console and colored seat belts.

Now also with all-wheel steering

The wheels of the Panamera hang at the front on double wishbones, at the rear there is a multi-link axle. The three-chamber air spring with 40 percent more air volume is new; previously two chambers had to be sufficient. The roll stabilization now works electromechanically, the two halves of the stabilizer can be completely decoupled from each other when driving straight ahead. According to Panamera series manager Gernot Döllner, roll copying is excluded. Roll copying is the transfer of moments through the stabilizers from one wheel to the other on the corresponding axle. In Sport-plus mode, roll is completely eliminated. The system works with a 48-volt electrical system in order to generate the necessary quick and strong reactions. The 4D chassis control, which works as the central chassis coordinator, is new, with the fourth dimension referring to time. The chassis coordinator creates a computer model of the Panamera and constantly calculates the best possible chassis setting for each individual wheel in real time. Among other things, the tendency to rumble, which some have criticized on the Panamera's front axle, should be a thing of the past now electrically servo-assisted. Rear axle steering is now also available as an option in the Panamera. It steers in opposite directions up to a speed of 50 km /h, at higher speeds the front and rear wheels steer in the same direction. The maximum steering angle of the rear wheels is three degrees.

19-inch tires are now standard on the Panamera, the turbo model is equipped with 20-inch wheels as standard, 21-inch wheels are optional. What immediately shines in the eye of every observer: The gigantic yellow brake calipers of the optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). The carbon-ceramic discs have a diameter of 420 millimeters at the front, and the monstrous brake callipers that go with them house a ten-piston brake system - a good piece of safety in a two-ton car that jumps to 100 km /h in 3.6 seconds as a turbo and a maximum of 306 km /h is fast. However, Porsche charges the ceramic brakes offered for all Panamera models at 8,937 euros. With the previous model, only ten percent of Turbo customers ordered this extra.

New V8 biturbo

The turbo shown to us is on the road with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo newly developed by Porsche, which turns the Panamera into the fastest luxury sedan on the Nordschleife in 7:38 minutes made ( article ). The engine will later also be available to other models of the VW group; a factory for the production of this unit is currently being built in Zuffenhausen. The engine with a hot V has an output of 550 hp, generates a maximum torque of 770 Newton meters and consumes 9.3 liters per 100 kilometers on the test bench. Series manager Gernot Döllner promises the turbo-charged engine that the turbo-charged engine will turn as easily as a vacuum. In addition, the engine is now located in a so-called scavenge air duct, which contributes to optimal heat management. The developers are particularly proud of the integration of the strut brace that divides the stylish engine cover into two halves: this significantly increases the rigidity of the car. In addition, the power plant is located in a kind of honeycomb strut - overall, the Panamera has become significantly stiffer than its predecessor. The sound of the V8 is pleasing with its dry, robust bollern, which literally forces the driver to take the next throttle.

The 2, 9-liter six-cylinder from the 4S with 440 hp and a maximum torque of 550 Newton meters. The 4S sprints to 100 km /h in 4.2 seconds, and the top speed is 289 km /h in the data sheet. The 4S burns an average of 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers. In the 4S Diesel, a V8 is used that has 422 hp and a hefty 850 Newton meters on the crankshaft. 100 km /h is reached in 4.3 seconds, with a maximum of 285 km /h: Porsche speaks of the fastest diesel in the luxury segment. An average consumption of 5.7 liters of diesel should be sufficient for 100 kilometers. All Panameras offered at the market launch have all-wheel drive.

Eight-speed double-clutch transmissions

It can even handle the 850 Newton meters of the 4S diesel: the power in the new Panamera is from an eight-speed -Dual clutch transmission.This short four-shaft transmission is a new development from the supplier ZF. The rear derailleur is already designed for future hybrid variants of the Panamera, which Porsche can practically all implement with the same engine position. Porsche is not yet revealing which combustion engines will serve as the basis for the hybrid variants. A sports car manufacturer could definitely make the potent V8 biturbo even more powerful with hybridization.

The new Porsche Panamera can be ordered from the beginning of November 2016, prices start at 113,027 euros for the 4S, followed by the 4S diesel 116,954 euros, the turbo is charged at least 153,011 euros.
