E a month before he was in Geneva at the Geneva Motor Show to the public is shown, Volkswagen unveiled the new VW Touareg to the trade press today. The large off-roader is considerably upgraded, peppered with numerous new technical features and considerably more economical.

Completely new engines and, for the first time, a hybrid drive

In order to reduce thirst, the engine range has been completely renewed. A V8 diesel with a displacement of 4.2 liters, 340 hp and a range of torque of 800 Newton meters, which is already known from the Audi range, will make its debut in the Volkswagen. Promised average consumption: 9.1 liters. Option two is the revised three-liter V6 diesel (240 hp /550 Newton meters), which should be satisfied with 7.4 liters on average. The consumption of the V6 FSI fell particularly sharply: the new 3.6-liter direct-injection petrol engine, at 9.9 liters, needs exactly 2.5 liters less than its predecessor.

The fourth variant is the most complex: The new hybrid drive replaces the previous V8 petrol engine. The V6 TSI supercharged engine (333 hp) is coupled with a 52 hp electric motor, which is installed between the automatic transmission and the engine. Ideally, the two drives together mobilize 379 hp and 580 Newton meters. In contrast to the Lexus RX400h, the electric motor installed in front of the gearbox means that the rest of the drive train is retained, making the Touareg Hybrid a fully-fledged off-roader with a trailer load of 3.5 tons. The hybrid can drive purely electrically up to 50 km /h before the combustion engine starts. With this technology, an average consumption of 8.2 liters of petrol should be possible.

Eight-speed automatic as standard in the new VW Touareg II

All versions of the Touareg will in future receive a new eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. There are now two variants of all-wheel drive: Standard is now a reduction-free permanent all-wheel drive with Torsen differential, as is also offered in the new Amarok. The Terrain-Tech-Package can be ordered for an extra charge. In addition to the off-road reduction with transfer case lock, it also offers a switchable rear axle lock.

The reduction in fuel consumption was also supported by the new design. The basic version is 208 kilos lighter than its predecessor. In addition, the height was reduced to 1.71 meters. The Touareg II is four centimeters long (4.8 meters) and wheelbase (2.9 meters)increased, the width remains at the level of the predecessor (1.93 meters). In the interior there is more space thanks to the additional length and newly designed furniture, the rear bench seat can now also be moved 16 centimeters in length and thus optionally increase the load space or the legroom. The luggage volume is now 580 to 1642 liters. With the more distinctive, less round look, the Touareg adapts to the new face of the VW brand.

Decent equipment, many new features

Several standard features and features that are subject to a surcharge celebrate their premiere on the Touareg II. A CD sound system with touchscreen, on-board computer with information screen, cruise control, multifunctional leather steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels and two-zone air conditioning are free of charge. All petrol and diesel engines come as standard with a start-stop system that automatically switches off the engine at the traffic lights. For a surcharge, there is now an outside camera system for all sides of the vehicle (here it is called Area View), the radar-controlled ACC distance control, new bi-xenon headlights with intelligent headlight height control via camera, active roll compensation for the air suspension and Lane Assist, which uses the lane markings to warn if the driver leaves the lane. VW is particularly proud of the huge panoramic glass sliding roof that takes up almost the entire roof area. A new comfort option is the electrically opening and closing tailgate.

Sales of the VW Touareg II will start in April - it can be ordered immediately. Prices for the new VW Touareg start at 50,700 euros for the Touareg V6 TDI Bluemotion Technology, the Touareg V8 TDI is available from 70,800 euros. VW is calling for a starting price of 73,500 euros for the Touareg Hybrid. Further prices have not yet been mentioned.
