This is what the head of Volkswagen of America, Stefan Jacoby, said on Sunday according to V W in Herndon near the US Capital Washington in the run-up to the auto show in Detroit, which starts on Monday (January 11th).

VW wants to become a mass manufacturer in the USA

VW sales in the USA are expected to rise to 400,000 to 450,000 vehicles by 2013. Last year Volkswagen sold around 213,000 cars in the US market. Jacoby also said VW wanted to expand its dealer network and become a mass manufacturer in the US. So far, VW is comparatively weak in the United States and currently only has a market share of two percent. However, VW was not so badly affected by the collapse of the US auto market.

The automaker has high hopes for its new US plant in the state of Tennessee. From 2011 onwards, a new mid-range model specially designed for the US market will be manufactured there. VW's goal is to sell 800,000 cars in the US in 2018.
