Various media had previously reported on the upcoming appointment of Browning. Volkswagen did not want to comment on the speculation of personnel.

Jacoby went to Volvo

The key position in the VW group had become vacant after previous US VW boss Stefan Jacoby took the lead in August of the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo had changed. Browning, 51, was named President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America effective October 1, 2010. He is currently responsible for managing the Volkswagen Group's National Sales Companies (NSC) worldwide.

Browning has held numerous senior sales and marketing roles at General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor Company around the world. For example, he was Vice President European Sales, Service and Marketing in the GM Group from 2001 to 2008, from 2006 to 2008 also CEO of Vauxhall Motors and since 2008 GM Vice President Global Sales, Service and Marketing. From 1997 to 2001 Browning worked for the Ford Group, initially as Executive Director Marketing for Ford Europe and then as Global Managing Director at Jaguar. He switched to the Volkswagen Group in June 2010.
