D he VW Tiguan began his career in 2007 as a late starter under the compact SUV, and its first generation is now ending as a classic and a successful type. It dominated its class practically from the start and is still in great demand in the phase-out phase, although the successor was already presented at the IAA in September. It is important to clarify whether the new Tiguan is really much better and whether it is worth the wait.

Both appear all in white at this first meeting, but with a strong, sporty R-Line look - good to recognizable by the mighty aprons, wide sills, spoilers, black wheel arch extensions and 19 or 20 inch wheels.

The good look is a thing of the past

The differences between the two are nevertheless serious. While the previous VW Tiguan has a tame appearance, its successor is much more angular, stricter and therefore more adult. So there is not so much left of the soft design of the first generation. Rather, critics could claim to see similarities with the new BMW X1 at the rear.

Hans-Dieter Seufert
There isn't much left of the rather soft design of the predecessor.

Whether this will be a disadvantage remains to be seen. In any case, customers benefit from the expanded format. Building on the current MQB platform, the new VW Tiguan is flatter, but six centimeters longer and three centimeters wider. At the same time, the wheelbase extends to 2.68 meters (plus 77 mm). The consequence: even more freedom of movement for the rear passengers and a 145 liter larger load volume (615 to1,655 liters). A longitudinally movable and foldable rear bench including tilt adjustment is always standard. The SUV also retains the commendably high trailer load of 2.5 tonnes.

Tiguan cockpit as in the Passat

When getting in, the first thing you notice is that the eight round ventilation nozzles are not used Year-old predecessors brought a touch of off-road romance. In future, four horizontal air vents will have to suffice in the tidy, functionally designed dashboard. After pressing the start button, a completely virtual instrument cluster appears behind the steering wheel, which VW has only used in the Passat so far and which should be available in the Tiguan for around 600 euros. Even the navigation map can be beamed directly in front of the driver, and a head-up display is now also available for an extra charge.

Hans-Dieter Seufert
The virtual instruments are a real asset, otherwise they have a solid VW look.

With regard to infotainment and web connection, both VW Tiguan generations are otherwise largely on par, because since the last update in May, the previous type has also been downloading current traffic information and connecting to all kinds of smartphones on the center console there is in future a rotary dr ├╝ck switch but another important innovation: With the all-wheel drive version 4Motion - still with Haldex clutch and electronically simulated locks - four operating modes can be set here.

VW Tiguan from 26,000 euros

Despite all the changes, Volkswagen is sticking to the known prices. According to our information, the VW Tiguan basic version with 125 hp petrol engine should start at around 26,000 euros, with a city emergency brake including pedestrian detection and the lane departure warning system already on board for the first time. In addition, the already available safety equipment on the successor will be enhanced with additional systems such as traffic jam and lane change assistants and the previously offered steering xenon lamps will be replaced by adaptive LED headlights.

The comfort in the VW Tiguan can also be enhanced with new ones in the future Boost extras. In addition to aThree-zone automatic air conditioning are available such as comfort seats, heated steering wheel, electromechanical progressive steering and the tailgate that can be opened electrically by swiveling the foot. Instead, the somewhat cryptic terms Trend & Fun or Track & Style have been dropped in favor of the brand-typical Trend, Comfort and Highline equipment lines. Those who value a robust look can now book an off-road package.

Wait or buy?

Although it will be a while before the driving date, the first impression is optimistic: The new VW Tiguan has good prerequisites for continuing the success story of its predecessor. More airy, high-tech, safer and affordable - what should go wrong? However, if you prefer the restrained appearance and can do without the extra cargo space and extras, you will certainly not go wrong if you continue to use the very sophisticated and at the same time comfortable first generation. Especially since the dealers are currently granting high discounts.
