After the rather evolutionary model change from generation five to six, the great revolution is also missing with Golf number seven. At least that applies to the optics, under the sheet metal everything is actually different ( h here all information about the new VW Golf VII ). And the sports group? The study of the new VW Golf GTI has already been shown in Paris and the curtain falls on the production version of the sports model at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The new VW Golf GTI can be ordered from March 5th for at least 28,350 euros.

VW Golf VII GTI with performance lookup

For the first time the VW Golf GTI offered in two performance levels. The base has the two-liter turbo engine, which has been boosted by ten to 220 hp. With the performance package, the TFSI engine delivers 10 hp more. The maximum torque is 350 Nm. In addition, the manufacturer specifies the curb weight at 1,351 kilograms, which is compared to the well-equipped predecessor special model Edition 35 (in the supertest) would be a reduction of 50 kilos.

The new VW Golf GTI is equipped with a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, and a six-speed DSG can also be ordered as an option. The VW Golf VII GTI is said to be capable of sprinting to 100 km /h in 6.5 seconds, as V-Max it has 246 things to book. With the performance package, the standard sprint is completed in 6.4 seconds and the top speed is only reached at 250 km /h.

Admittedly, higher agility does not guarantee more performance. But also thought of VW development director Ulrich Hackenberg. “In the GTI, an electronically controlled lock is used that uses friction elements. In contrast to the XDS system, which works with braking intervention, the power transmission between the wheels is varied here. On the Nordschleife, that takes up to 12 seconds per lap. ”The front axle differential lock is also part of the performance package, as is a reinforced brake system with internally ventilated brake discs.

Traditional GTI design also in Generation Seven

For a sportier design of the VW GolfThe GTI is characterized by its own front and rear bumpers, side skirts, roof spoiler and a rear diffuser with chromed exhaust tailpipes on the outside. In addition to the traditionally red painted brake calipers and a sports suspension, the compact sports car has 17-inch rims with 225/45 tires and darkened LED taillights as standard.

Sports seats with a check pattern also dominate the interior in the seventh model generation of the VW Golf GTI. Further equipment details are the black headliner and red ambient lighting including illuminated door sills as well as a sports steering wheel, a gear knob, the instrument cluster, special decorative strips as well as the pedals and footrest in stainless steel.

VW Golf R with four-cylinder 2.0 -Liter turbo gasoline engine

If even more traction and performance are required: The VW Golf R is also getting a successor. 'Today the Golf R has 270 hp, so there is still room for improvement,' says Hackenberg. Incidentally, the presumably 290 hp R variant will again have all-wheel drive. But even the civilian versions that have already been ordered and will be available from October shouldn't shuffle lazily around the corners. From the 122 PS strong TSI engine, the VW Golf VII has a further developed multi-link rear axle taken from its predecessor.

In addition, the engineers in this performance class opted for progressive steering with variable transmission. “The ratio increases as the steering angle increases. On the one hand, this requires fewer steering movements when parking. On the other hand, we have sharpened the overall ratio to enable particularly agile steering behavior, ”explains Hackenberg. In addition, VW has spiked a bit at BMW and offers a technology similar to the driving experience switch. At the push of a button, the characteristics of the accelerator, steering, dual clutch transmission (optional) and the adaptive dampers, which are subject to a surcharge, vary from economical to comfortable to sporty - all in all, it sounds like an attractive technology package. And the carefully further developed optics have never stood in the way of the success of the Golf.

The development of the Golf generations is shown in the Test all six VW Golf GTI generations on the racetrack .
