F erdinand Piëch had testified to the Braunschweig public prosecutor that he had informed the then CEO Martin Winterkorn earlier than previously admitted about the manipulation of the diesel engines. Piëch is thus burdening the former CEO - but also himself, and that would have consequences as Hofmann, VW supervisory board and IG Metall boss, explains in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Piëch should have known early

If the statement were correct, then Piëch would have violated his duties as chairman of the supervisory board and possible liability claims would then have to be examined. The same also applies to the former CEO Winterkorn, if he was actually privy to the criminal machinations of his engineers earlier, as Piëchinsinued.

If Winterkorn knew about the diesel affair earlier than he claims, it could also help shareholders - and become expensive for VW. Investors are suing the group for damages in the amount of more than eight billion euros, reports the Süddeutsche.

Piëch should get his early clues about the investigations in the US, according to information from Süddeutscher Zeitung, NDR and WDR from Avi Primor have, the former Israeli ambassador to Germany. Primor was reportedly visiting the VW headquarters in Wolfsburg in February 2015. There Piëch and Primor would have withdrawn for a one-to-one conversation. Primor is said to have said that there were problems with emissions in America and that VW cheated. He was quoting from a paper. Piëch is said not to have received a copy of it.

Winterkorn's lawyers keep a low profile. They had stated that their client had only found out a few days ago 'of the existence of a further statement' from the former VW supervisory board boss Piëchs. Winterkorn does not know the details of this statement. He will only comment on the allegations made against him later, when the files of the Braunschweig public prosecutor are available for inspection.
