VW and Audi expand diesel exchange bonus programs

Porsche
For cars up to emission standard Euro 5
Subscriptions & booklets

Shortly after the grand coalition presented its package of diesel measures, car buyers are threatened with an opaque discount and premium chaos. Some manufacturers only promote new cars, others also give bonuses when buying a young used one. Some only give back money for diesel up to Euro 5, others also include Euro 6 diesel in their range. Some brands limit their campaigns, others don't - and so on. In our overview you can see exactly which premiums the individual manufacturers grant.

VW switch bonus now throughout Germany

Now it is official: VW is expanding its diesel switch bonus, which was previously only for the Inhabitants of the 14 particularly polluted cities and the surrounding area applied to all of Germany. However, the program is limited in time: It starts on January 24th and ends on April 30th. The new regulation was preceded by intensive discussions between VW boss Herbert Diess and Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer. Scheuer had been calling for the expansion for a long time, but Volkswagen had previously refused. The previously granted amount of the discount remains unchanged. Anyone who trades in a Euro 4 or Euro 5 diesel at a VW dealer will receive up to 7,000 euros in addition to the value of the used car when buying a new car, depending on the model. If you are interested in buying an Up, you have to be satisfied with 500 euros (see table). Depending on the model, discounts for annual cars shrink by 25 to 50 percent.

VW has come up with a second pillar in its concept - a kind of scrapping bonus, which VW calls the “environmental bonus”. This says: Anyone who scraps a diesel car from any manufacturer that only meets the Euro 1 to Euro 4 emissions standard can receive a discount of up to 8,000 euros. However, there are conditions. So far, the regulation has only applied across Germany to customers who buy a new vehicle with a diesel engine. At most, buyers in the 14 key regions could choose between all types of drive for new vehicles. Annual cars are also integrated into this regulation.

So far, only new car premiums for VW commercial vehicles

Volkswagen's commercial vehicle division is also expanding its switch bonus to all of Germany and retaining the previously granted amount of discounts. Depending on the selected car model, the range therefore ranges from 3,000 to 7,000 euros, and for new vehicles with commercial vehicle registration from 3,000 to 6,000 euros (see tables). Those who scrap their old diesel get between 4,000 and7,000 euros refunded.

Up to 10,000 euros from Audi

Audi is joining the Volkswagen brand with its bonus program. The Ingolstadt-based company was already ahead of the game when it came to the scrapping bonus: it was already valid throughout Germany and continues to do so. The price advantage when buying a new car is - regardless of the type of engine - up to 10,000 euros. What is new, however, is that the switch bonus for diesel with the Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission standards is no longer limited to the 14 key regions, but has been extended to the whole country. Depending on the model, there is a discount of up to 9,000 euros. Both programs are also used when buying a young used car. In this case, the premium is 75 percent of the amount that is repaid for the corresponding new vehicle.

Scrapping and exchange premium at Seat

Seat is also applying the group concept to its own up to now In a way: If you want to take advantage of the environmental bonus, i.e. scrap your diesel classified according to Euro 1 to Euro 4 and buy a new car, you can benefit from a bonus of up to 8,000 euros. This applies across Germany - but only if the newly purchased Seat is a diesel. In contrast, only Seat buyers who live in the 14 particularly heavily polluted regions can benefit from the switch bonus. Here the premium is up to 7,000 euros. It also applies - with corresponding discounts - to young used cars. However, as the list shows, the maximum rate for both premium variants only applies to the Alhambra. For other, higher-volume models, there is a maximum of 5,000 euros.

Skoda pays up to 7,500 euros

Skoda follows the example of its sister companies VW and Audi and is now offering its switch bonus nationwide. Within this framework, drivers of Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesels can switch to a current Skoda model and receive a discount of between 500 and 6,500 euros in addition to the trade-in of their old car (see table). The offer is effective immediately for cars of all drive types and is limited to April 30, 2019. Nothing will change with the environmental bonus: Anyone scrapping a diesel that meets the Euro 1 to 4 emission standards and buys a new or young used vehicle with the Euro 6 standard for it can benefit from bonuses of between 1,500 and 7,500 euros. When buying a diesel, this applies nationwide, in the 15 particularly polluted regions, regardless of the type of drive. The environmental bonus has not yet been limited in time.

Nissan's 'Diesel Deal' continues

Nissan's exchange program was originally limited to December 31, 2018, but will now run until the end of March 2019. Depending on the model, it grants a discount of between 3,000 and 5,000 euros for new vehicles with internal combustion engines (see table). The offer applies to old diesel engines complying with the Euro 1 to 5 emission standards, but subject to two conditions: The diesel that is exchanged must be registered with the customer for at least six months and the dealer must buy the previous car. A special case is the Nissan Leaf electric car, where the diesel deal and the electric bonuses from the state and the manufacturer add up to a discount of 5,400 euros. The Pulsar, Evalia, 370Z and GT-R models have been excluded for the time being and the exchange bonus cannot be combined with other offers -container 'is-element element-article-scrolltable>

Hyunda i is extending its exchange program, which was originally launched until the end of 2018, until March 31, 2019. Depending on the model, the manufacturer grants a discount of between 2,500 and 5,000 euros (see table). The bonus is available for exchanged diesel from all manufacturers for both private and commercial customers. The cars must have been classified according to the Euro 1 to Euro 5 emission standards and have been registered for at least six months on the last owner. In contrast to what the grand coalition called for, the offer applies throughout Germany and not just in the 14 key regions. It is a shame that Hyundai does not include any of its electric cars, plug-in hybrids or the Nexo with fuel cells in the “Green Deal 2.0”. For the time being there is only state funding.

Buyers of a new Opel car can also claim the bonus if they exchange a Euro 5 diesel. However, it has to be an Opel model and you have to live in one of the 15 priority regions defined by the federal government. Anyone who buys a car that costs 120,000 euros can get a credit of 6,000 euros.

Customers can choose between new and young used cars and also choose whether the new car is a gasoline, diesel or plug-in hybrid.
