G efallen are new records for sprint times from over 500 and 1,000 meters: After 13.71 seconds, the Iron Knight had reached the first 500 meters. That corresponds to an average speed of 131.29 km /h.

A truck that is 276 km /h

The second mark, 1000 meters, fell after 21.29 seconds 169 km /h. The record attempts were driven on August 24, 2016 on a cordoned-off area in northern Sweden. The entire distance has to be covered in both directions within an hour for the world record. During the record attempt, the 'Iron Knight' accelerated to 276 km /h.

The goal was to beat the values of the Volvo hybrid truck Mean Green from 2011. At that time, the truck with 2,100 hp (1,800 hp from a diesel + 300 PS from an electric motor) over the 500 meter distance an average of 115.4 km /h, over the 1,000 meters 152.2 km /h.

Power-to-weight ratio like Porsche 918 Spyder

In order to be adequately equipped, Volvo has specially prepared the Iron Knight. The racing truck is roughly based on the FH series. The built-in 12.8 liter D13 in-line six-cylinder slide into the center of the chassis and its output has been increased significantly above the standard 540 hp. Water-cooled intercoolers and four turbochargers bring the six-cylinder to 2,400 hp and 6,000 Nm of torque.

Reduced weight. At 4.5 tonnes

This drive force is passed on to the rear axle via a double clutch transmission with reinforced clutches. In addition, the Volvo engineers have aerodynamically optimized the cabin of the Iron Knight and slimmed down the truck itself where possible. The 2,400 HP weighs 4.5 tons. The power-to-weight ratio is 1.875 kg /PS and therefore on par with that of a Porsche 918 Spyder.
