Although the 'North American International Auto Show' in Detroit is still one of the most important industry barometers for the automotive industry, the fair has lost importance in recent years due to the decline of the US auto industry. At this year's fair in Detroit (until January 24th) the focus is therefore on series vehicles with low emissions and studies without any pollutant emissions.

Trend towards new compacts

Even With the GMC Granite Concept, the General Motors brand GMC is venturing into the compact car segment for the first time. With a wheelbase of 2.63 meters, the GMC Granite should comfortably accommodate four people. When designing the compact multi-purpose vehicle, which draws on the technical basis of the Chevrolet Orlando, the developers have resorted to a mixture of minivan, compact SUV and crossover.

Large and heavy fuel guzzlers can also be seen at this year's auto show - for example the 2010 model year of the Dodge Ram or the massive crossover Lincoln MKX, which has a 3.7-liter V6 engine and 305 hp goes into the new model year. The latter can also be ordered as an all-wheel drive variant and is also equipped with a luxurious interior including HD radio with iTunes, surround sound and new, touch-sensitive controls.

The refreshed Dodge Ram fleet still includes a heavy-duty variant that was designed primarily for tough work in the field or on construction sites. Representatives of this type drive with twin tires at the rear and a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 unit with almost 400 hp under the hood, whereby the 2500 and 3500 versions of the Ami pickup also come with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel 350 HP are driven. In addition, Chrysler is only showing new equipment variants of the SUV Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty as well as two new special models of the Jeep Wrangler.

Mini Beachcomber: four-meter buggy for use on the beach

The crossover SUV GMC Acadia presented in 2007 is getting the 2011 model year, the third Quarter 2010 comes on the US market, a Denali version is put aside. There is also an eye-catcher at the mini stand: the Mini Beachcomber will be presented there, which takes up the idea of the Mini Moke and thus shows another possible variant of the upcoming four-wheel drive.

Otherwise, sees it turned out quite bleak on the off-road vehicle front in Detroit. Yetthe organizers are expecting around 650,000 visitors - a few years ago it was more than 800,000.
