F uring eight percent of all cars sold in China, manufacturers should collect credit points from 2018, reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung. The rate will increase to ten percent in 2019 and twelve percent in 2020.

The plan: credit points for electric drives

The exact amount of credit points is still unclear. But the effects can already be calculated: Manufacturers such as BMW or VW have to sell significantly more electric cars and plug-in hybrids than before. VW recently sold three million cars a year in China. The group would have to collect at least one point for 240,000 cars. With four points for an electric car, VW would have to sell 60,000 e-cars a year.

At BMW, the calculation looks like this: 379,000 cars (January to September 2016) are compared to 1,024 electric cars. If the quota comes, BMW will have to bring seven to eight times as many electric vehicles to the public.

Minister Gabriel: Unfounded concerns

However, it is still open whether the electric quota will come. The Chinese Minister of Industry Miao rejected the concerns of the German carmakers. According to ARD, Federal Economics Minister Gabriel said after a meeting with Miao that these concerns were unjustified.

Owners of electric cars in China already have advantages when it comes to registration: for example, they do not have to take part in the license plate raffle in Shanghai take part. Beijing pays up to 8,000 euros in subsidies for an electric car.
