S on the way to' The Quail ' You can't get out of your amazement: You line up behind the Mercedes CLK-GTR, SLR, Lamborghini Aventador and Rolls-Royce Wraith - and it doesn't matter how much horsepower you have under the hood, you move forward at walking pace. The traffic jam for visitors is already several miles long at 10:00 a.m.

Once the car is parked, you can see all the super athletes in the world in the spacious parking areas of Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California . Whole rows of McLaren P1, Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Gallardo, Rolls-Royce Phantom and Ghost can be strolled through on the way to the entrance.

Relaxed atmosphere with champagne and oysters

The atmosphere is relaxed - typically California. The 70-year-old, suntanned businessman in shorts and a T-shirt runs next to the sprayed-on blonde, the mid-twenties internet billionaire next to the car blogger, it doesn't matter. What they all have in common is their enthusiasm for cars. And that they paid $ 600 for the admission ticket.

In return, 'The Quail, a motorsports gathering' has the full all-round service: champagne, caviar, oysters for free - if you feel comfortable 50 m long queue. But the culinary delights are not the focus here, because there is an exclusive collection of automobile rarities on display.

This year there is, among other things, a special show of the 'Long Tail Cars of Le Mans', a collection from Porsche up to year of construction 1965 and Ferrari with special bodies.

Ferrari with special bodies

7 unique Ferrari from 1952 until 2015 are spread over the site. Including a Ferrari 342/375 America Cabriolet - Ferrari's first left-hand drive convertible ever to be delivered to King Leopold of Belgium.

The Ferrari 340 Mexico Berlinetta, with the Luigi Chinetti and Jean, comes from the same year Lucas took third place overall at the Carrera Panamericana. The further racing history includes a Mille Miglia participation in 1953 with Eugenio Castellotti as driver. Phil Hill and Luigi Chinetti started with the car at the 12 Hours of Reims.

The youngest Ferrari in the special show is the Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Lusso, five of which were made in 2015.

Porsche 356 up to 1965

15 Porsche 356s from the years 1952 to 1965 are parked in the middle of the site. The oldest one impresses with its unrestored one Original state. The car stood in a garage for around 30 years before it was brought back into the daylight. It comes from the second year of production, in which a total of 417 coupés were built.

All other 356 have already been restored at least once. The 1957 Porsche 356A Carrera 1500 GS Coupé from Douglas Oldfield, who bought the car in 1975 when he was 19, has a special history - his first car. In the 1990s he restored the Porsche - but the original engine was missing. 'It was only after 20 years that I found the rare Fuhrmann engine - in a bedroom in Indinapolis, where it had been dismantled since 1962.'

Le Mans long-tail racing car

A few meters away are five legendary Le Mans racing cars that were driven by famous drivers: The 1969 Porsche 908/02 long-tailed car, known as 'Flounder', was driven by Vic Elford and Richard Attwood in the 1969 12-hour race at Sebring (still as a short tail). The following year it was - converted to a long tail - the car of Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

After decades without Le Mans participation, Jaguar dared to do that in 1982 with the XJR-5 Comeback. Developed and built by Bob Tullius' Group 44, the British entered Le Mans with the car in 1984 and 1985.

In 1985, the Mazdaspeed 757, which is powered by a 450 hp three-disc rotary engine, was also created. Nigel Stroud was responsible for the design, who already played a key role in shaping the Porsche 956. In 1987 the Mazda, which is equipped with the transmission from the Porsche 962, won its class at Le Mans.

The fourth Le Mans racing car is the Pescaloro 01 from 2007. It is the first of a total of 9 built Copies and started 2007 to 2009 in the endurance championship.

Shelby GT350 special show

Further highlights from 'The Quail 'are this year the special show for the 50th birthday of the Shelby Mustang GT350. The 40 or so cars drove between the visitors with a rumble of thunder and then lined up in an impressive row.

1934 Packard by James Hetfield

Metallica singer and guitarist James Hetfield brought a dream made of aluminum to 'The Quail'. Based on a 1934 Packard chassis, he had his dream car built by Rick Dore Customs in the style of Figoni & Falschi's 1938 Delahaye 156.

De Tomaso rarities

Two special De Tomaso from 1965 are eye-catching: A Ghia-De Tomaso P70, a collaboration between Carroll Shelby, Peter Brock andAlessandro De Tomaso was created and is powered by a five-liter V8. And a De Tomaso Sport 5000, which is the further development of the P70. Both De Tomaso come from the collection of Mark Mashayedi.
