Takata airbags: recall for 4.9 million VW in China

V on the Takata airbag recall in China 2.35 million FAW-VW and 2.4 million SAIC-VW are affected. Shanghai Volkswagen, based in Anting, builds models such as the Lavida, Santana, Passat and Touran for the Chinese market. The joint venture with FAW, based in northern China, produces models such as Sagitar, Magotan and Jetta as well as the Chinese long versions of the Audi A4 and A6.

The recall also affects 103,573 cars that were manufactured by VW itself . The recall will begin in March 2018. According to Spiegel Online, over 20 million cars in China were equipped with Takata airbags.

Recall for 850,000 VW and Audi in the USA

02/11/2016 - Volkswagen and Audi have to recall a total of 850,000 vehicles equipped with Takata airbags to workshops in the USA. The VW vehicles (a total of 680,000 models) are the Passat, Eos, Golf and the Jetta as a station wagon from the construction periods 2006 to 2014. This was confirmed by VW spokespersons for various news agencies. VW did not provide any information about the costs of the recall. 'As soon as the chassis numbers of the vehicles that may be affected are identified, all vehicle owners in the USA will be informed,' it says in a message Recall cars in the US. A total of 170,000 unspecified models from the model years 2005 to 2014 are affected.

According to the American traffic safety authority NHTSA, models from BMW and Daimler are also affected. Mercedes had only announced in February 2016, in the USA 840,000 car and van models to be ordered back because of defective airbags. The Stuttgart-based company has set up provisions of 340 million euros for the 2015 financial year.

10 deaths due to defective Takata airbags

There have been major problems with the supplier's airbags for years Takata. Due to technical defects, they suddenly trigger and throw paneling parts into the interior. Investigators in the US are now assuming 10 deaths. Fiat /Chrysler, Honda and Ford as well as Mazda are also affected by the recalls. Experts estimate that defective airbags are installed in around 50 million cars.
