G easy and equal, that belongs to the Standard wisdom, likes to join. Anyone who drives a premium automobile like the Mercedes E-Class will also look around the top brands when it comes to buying new tires.

With luxury sedans, not every penny counts

Cheap rubbers are out of the question because not every penny counts for the car itself. In principle, there is nothing wrong with that, as the current summer tire test by auto motor und sport shows that you can't go wrong with the products of the renowned manufacturers Goodyear, Pirelli, Continental, Dunlop and Michelin. But it can still be advisable to look at the developments of brands that are considered outsiders in the market. Especially since most of them have docked with the big corporations anyway. Uniroyal's European division, for example, is part of the Continental Group, and the Vredestein company from the Netherlands recently took over the Indian tire giant Apollo. Only Nokian from Finland is still active as an upright lone fighter.

Hankook sets the tone

This time, however, a completely different competitor is responsible for the test drives on the Goodyear development course in Mireval in the south of France to upset the fabric of the tire world: Hankook from South Korea. It already begins on the watered handling course with tight and fast corners. Together with the Continental Sport Contact 3, the Uniroyal Rain Sport 2 and the Michelin Pilot Sport 3, the latest version of the Hankook Ventus S1 with the additional designation Evo achieves the best lap times. He shows a very good-natured, easily manageable cornering behavior up to the limit. The Conti alone behaves a bit more convincingly, as it can be driven at the limit of grip with a minimum of corrective steering movements. This gives it a significantly better rating than the Bridgestone RE 050, which is no longer brand new and with which the Mercedes is also very fast. However, with its restless cornering behavior, which constantly changes between understeer and oversteer, it demands an attentive and talented driver.

The rest of the field in the summer tire test is divided

The candidates from Hankook , Pirelli, Dunlop and Continental are among the test opponentsSporty tires with largely neutral driving behavior and emphasized precise steering reactions. Michelin, Goodyear and Uniroyal show less sensitive handling with a more pronounced tendency to understeer, but show a high level of good-naturedness right up to the limit. Like the Bridgestone, the Vredestein and the Nokian are not clearly defined. Load changes in curves let the initially understeering Mercedes break out with the rear. When driving with ESP, the electronics react with comparatively violent braking interventions.

The Hankook gives its second gala performance when braking. In wet conditions, it comes to a stop from 100 km /h after just 47.9 meters, taking nine points away from the second-placed Conti (50.5 meters). Bridgestone brings up the rear. It extends the braking distance to 56 meters, which means that a preliminary decision has already been made, since the most points can be collected when braking in the auto motor und sport test. The Hankook confirms its top position even on dry roads.

Hankook sets the new benchmark

The Continental cannot be dangerous under these conditions, it is even at the bottom of the field. However, the differences are nowhere near as great as on a wet road. So it is enough for the Conti to be rated 'particularly recommendable'. The Goodyear with low rolling resistance also falls into this category, as does the Pirelli Cinturato. The new benchmark for this tire class is the Hankook from Korea.
