Renault Scénic in R-Space style

R enault has been offering its van since 1996, the new Renault Scénic will be the fourth generation of the model from 2016. And it is clearly sleeker than its rather staid predecessor. As early as 2011, the French gave a corresponding outlook on the van future with the R-Space study. And its design was saved in some parts in the series.

The jagged lower window line was preserved, as well as the narrow window band and the very gently rising windshield, which runs almost seamlessly into the roof. As with the Espace, the panorama roof is divided into three parts. The missing B-pillar and also the doors that open in opposite directions were reserved for the R-Space.

The 20-inch wheels that the van can carry as standard are particularly eye-catching. The consequence, however, is not massive rubbers, as in a full-size SUV. Renault installs newly designed 195/55 tires over the customizable rims. The concept is called 'tall and narrow' and with these dimensions ensures an improvement in aerodynamic efficiency. In combination with the wide track and the short overhangs, the new Scénic lies well on the road.

Renault seems to have arrived - with a new self-confidence and self-image for the brand's appearance. With the dynamic lines of the body, the van is recognizable among the family members Espace, Capture, Clio and Co. This is also reflected in the interior: the tidy cockpit is enthroned by the tall-format 8.7-inch touchscreen known from Mégane and Talisman. Behind the steering wheel there is a digital round instrument, the appearance of which can be adjusted via the menu.

Shock for coffee fans

If you let your eyes wander through the interior, however, you twitch a sudden shock through the limbs of every coffee lover. No cupholders? Faux pas! Catastrophe! But Renault counters with the longitudinally movable center console, which reveals the view of the two cup holders by slightly moving back. D´accord, back to the resting heart rate. The materials and workmanship are appealing, there is hardly any hard plastic. Visible seams set unobtrusive accents. Only the glove compartment drawer and the pull-out compartment on the center console lag behind the otherwise good impression. Overall, the shelves in the interior offer a generous 63 liters of storage space. Everything is cleverly draped around the comfortable seats, which should also provide good lateral support in the rear.

Storage space addition in the Scénic at the push of a button

The trunk volume of the new Scénic increases to 572 liters . If necessary, folding down the rear seats provides additional storage space on a flat surface. Thanks to one-touch folding, all you need to do is press a button and the backrests of the rear seats fold forward by themselves. Just one press of a button is also necessary to change the atmosphere inside. The optional multisense system lets the ambient lighting shine in different colors. At the same time, the steering and engine response can be changed. The driving report will show how this works. The driving modes Sport, Comfort, Eco and Neutral are predefined.

Renault Scénic with diesel hybrid

Speaking of driving: the engine is equipped with seven units. The third generation diesel and gasoline engines, with a power range from 110 to 130 hp, will be taken over by Renault. The range is enriched with the stronger Energy dCi 160 EDC from Espace, and for the first time with a diesel hybrid. This is based on the dCi 110 and is also equipped with a 48-volt battery, which is supposed to provide more thrust at low speeds. Braking and recuperation recharge the battery. According to the manufacturer, the lowest consumption in the compact van class is the self-imposed goal of the mild hybrid system. The option list of the fourth Scénic generation also includes modern driver assistance systems such as an adaptive cruise control, an emergency brake assistant with pedestrian detection or a multi-colored head-up display. The prices are not yet known.

Weight savings thanks to new platform

The four-door model shows in the style of the brand with a large rhombus in the narrow grill, LED headlights and LED taillights. The black offset upper part of the body, excluding the C-pillar, which gives the model a sporty touch, is an eye-catcher. The wide track and the standard 20-inch wheels, which are pushed far out into the vehicle corners, leave the Scénic standing on the road. The tires have the format 195/55.

The van is on the new modular CMF platform of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, on which the new Mégane is already based and which results in a weight saving of around 50 kg Predecessor allowed.

More space in the new Renault Scénic

But the real revolution is waiting in the interior of the Renault Scénic, which offers more space thanks to the enlarged wheelbase. Until now, the seats in the second row could only be removed, but the new chairs can be lowered into the vehicle floor if more space is required. The trunk volume increased to 572 liters. The cockpit design is also based on the Mégane. Analog and digital instruments will be combined, the center console will carry a large touchscreen. A head-up display is available as an option.

The range of engines for the new Scénic includes two petrol and four diesel units with turbocharging and direct injection, including a diesel hybrid for the first time at Renault. The hybrid with 6-speed manual transmission is based on the dCi 110 unit and also has an electric motor that supports the four-cylinder, particularly when accelerating from low speeds. It is fed by a 48-volt battery that is recharged using recuperation when braking and coasting. The hybrid is expected to hit the market at the end of 2016.

Also on offer are normal diesels with 110, 130 and 160 hp and petrol engines with 115 and 130 hp. The diesels with 110 and 160 hp can also be combined with a dual clutch transmission.

The new feature of the assistance systems is theEmergency brake assist. Safety distance warning, blind spot warning and traffic sign recognition with speed warning and high beam assistant are also available. There is also the adaptive cruise control. Other equipment options include a head-up display and the Multi-Sense system, which has 5 driving modes.

Prices for the new Scénic have not yet been announced.
