How digital is the VW group going?

C chief editor Birgit Priemer on the wish of VW CEO Herbert Diess to turn the brand's cars into rolling smartphones.

It was seldom the strength of the VW Group to be the first on the market with a new development: The trend towards vans, large or small SUVs - all missed at first. However, this has never harmed the success: Touran, Touareg, Tiguan are now bestsellers in their classes.

VW boss Herbert Diess now wants to tread the horse from the front in the truest sense of the word: the brand that once arose from the legendary Beetle and will in future develop smartphones on wheels, cars that are fully networked. There are many indications that the journey in the shadow of Google and Co. is also going there. But is VW a brand that conveys these values? Hasn't she just deported Johann Jungwirth, who has long been acclaimed as a digitization guru, or JJ for short, as Chief Digital Officer to the USA and thus to the desert?

The announcements are full-bodied: by 2025, 3 , 5 billion euros will be invested in this topic. So far so good. But what does the customer actually do with a rolling smartphone? Does he expect services in the car that he has long had on his classic smartphone or tablet? Is he willing to pay extra for something that he already gets for free? Google Maps, for example, is an ingenious, free alternative to the classic navigation system.

Sales in the digital business for Volkswagen should be around one billion euros by 2025. Comparable figures can be found at BMW, Mercedes and Co. But all of them still owe a concrete answer to the question of what is really behind this in terms of content - except for charging and billing services for e-cars and car sharing.

Others are already warming up: Telecommunications providers like Vodafone are pushing along Power in the car. You want to offer and monetize entertainment content - for the time when the car is driving autonomously. It will take a while until then, but there is at least a vision behind it.

Has digitization reached the car manufacturers? Verbally yes, not yet in terms of content. It is one of the most important tools to create desire among the younger generation. But that can be done with mere announcementscertainly not lure out from behind the screen of their smartphones But let's not be so pessimistic. Maybe it's the same as always: VW comes late, but then huge.
