The requirements for the Porsche 918 Spyder as the new Über-Porsche are clearly defined: the new generation of sports cars should match the performance of the P orsche Carrera GT outperform. The manufacturer speaks of less than three seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km /h (Carrera GT: 3.9 seconds) and a lap time on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring under 7:22 minutes (Carrera GT: 7:32 minutes). In addition, a consumption of around three liters per 100 kilometers is targeted for the Porsche 918 Spyder. During the set-up drives on the 20.8-kilometer-long Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, multiple rally world champion Walter Röhrl even drove the prototype of the Porsche 918 Spyder, as our pictures show -A_-headline__article - beta '> Nordschleife best time of 7:14 minutes

The first lap time on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife for the Porsche 918 The manufacturer measured the Spyder prototype one year before the start of production of the series vehicles. 'With the fabulous time of 07:14 minutes, the 918 Spyder prototype fully confirmed its future-proof concept after just a few months on the road,' explains Frank Walliser, the overall project manager for the Porsche 918 Spyder. The more than 795 hp plug-in hybrid super sports car is said to have driven the record lap on series Michelin tires from a standing start. However, the record-breaking vehicle was equipped with the optional “Weissach” package, which improves driving dynamics and reduces weight. Instead of the standard 1,700 kilograms, magnesium wheels and the light aerodynamic extras weigh 35 kilograms less.

Porsche 918 Spyder is taking shape

Already on the Geneva Motor Show 2010 the concept study of the Porsche 918 Spyder was shown. After more than half of its development time to series production in 2013, the first Erlkönige were spotted (see photo show). In terms of design, the body made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) corresponds toof the study and also shows fully variable aerodynamic elements that automatically operate between optimal efficiency and maximum downforce.

Technology of the Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that offers a total output of over 795 hp. Its main source of propulsion is the 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine with more than 580 hp, which comes from the RS Spyder racing car and therefore enables speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. Its maximum torque should be around 500 Newton meters. In the Porsche 918, the exhaust tailpipes open in the upper rear immediately above the engine so that the hot exhaust gases can be discharged via the shortest, most direct route. This means that the liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with an energy content of around seven kilowatt hours is not additionally heated.

The hybrid module with an approximately 95 kW electric motor is arranged in the Porsche 918 Spyder as a parallel hybrid so that the rear axle can be driven either by the V8 or the electric motor and both power sources. In addition, there is another, self-sufficient electric motor with around 85 kW output on the front axle. The energy is obtained by means of recuperation, but can also be charged from the domestic power supply via a plug-in charging interface.

The Porsche 918 Spyder also has racing car technology for the chassis, which in addition to the variable PASM damper system also has rear-axle steering . Together with its low center of gravity and the weight-optimized body, the sports car should meet the driving dynamics requirements.

The start of production of the Porsche 918 Spyder is planned for September 18, 2013 in a factory in Zuffenhausen. In the same year, the first customers should receive their super sports car after paying the basic price of 768,026 euros, which, however, already includes VAT.

Porsche 918 Spyder in Martini paintwork

In addition, the sports car will be available in an exclusive Martin version, which is only available as a road vehicle. A motorsport involvement is not planned. Porsche and Martini already cooperated in 1969, as an Porsche 908/2 appeared for the first time with the sponsor sticker of the Italian vermouth manufacturer. Between 1973 and 1978 Martini was the official partner of the Porsche works team, which won numerous classic races such as the Targa Florio. Thanks to the new edition of the partnership, even the prototypes of the Porsche 918 Spyder are on the road in various Martini paint schemes.
