While standing at the New York Auto Show (April 2nd to 11th) a few - but usually long-known - electric car studies. And one or the other hybrid model even has its premiere, the Hyundai Sonata and the Lincoln MKZ, for example. Nevertheless, this time the stage belongs mainly to cars that are bigger, stronger and faster than usual.

GM with Volt and Powerkombi

General Motors, for example, is showing the electric car Chevrolet Volt and an economy version of the Chevrolet Cruze as well as a Cadillac CTS -V wagon. It is considered to be the fastest station wagon in the company's history. Under its hood is a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that develops 564 hp and should reach a good 300 km /h.

At Chrysler, next to the harbinger of the Americanized Lancia Delta and the Fiat 500, there is another one Viper in racing suit. With a displacement of 8.4 liters, it has 640 hp. At the Ford stand, however, sports car fans and all other trade fair guests look in vain for innovations. Because apart from the Lincoln MKZ as a part-time electrician, the now largest US manufacturer has no premieres to offer.

The Asians play big on

The Asians make a big splash again - especially those from the second row. In addition to the Sonata Hybrid, the South Koreans from Kia are also showing the surprisingly progressive Optima. He will come to Europe within a year as the new Magentis. There is an interesting study by Suzuki of an airy beach mobile with camping chairs and a surfboard holder. And from Subaru comes a sharpened version of the sporty Impreza WRX STI.

The literally thickest thing on the show is the new QX56 from Nissan subsidiary Infiniti: The off-road vehicle with up to seven seats is almost six meters tall and towers above most Visitors to the fair around at least one head and drives with a V8 engine that generates 400 hp from a displacement of 5.6 liters. The luxury brand is now also represented in Europe. But the QX56 is not built for our roads. 'An export to Germany or other countries across the Atlantic is not planned,' says a manager of the Japanese.

D German manufacturers with the greatest overall presence

German manufacturers almost traditionally provide by far the largest overall presence in New York. As they nowhere - apart from California and Florida - sell as many cars as on the US east coast, they showcase all the important innovations of the spring car here: from the twin pair VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne to the Audi A8 and R8 Spyder to the BMW 5 Series .

At Mercedes there are even two real world premieres. So the Swabians refreshed the R-Class for New York. They want to move the space cruiser 'closer to our SUVs' in the words of Sales Director Joachim Schmidt, in order to increase the previously disappointing sales figures. The front section in particular was redesigned based on the model of the M-Class and the diesel engines were also brought into shape. They all have a little more power and consume a little less.

The R-Class may be the more important car. But the visitors to the trade fair have their eyes on the SLS, which AMG is now showing for the first time in a racing suit. Equipped with huge wings, a few centimeters wider and around 200 kilograms lighter, the car, which will probably cost around 300,000 euros, will move from the boulevard to the pit lane next year accepts, nobody can simply drive away in New York with the 600 PS strong and over 300 km /h fast SLS. First of all, he is not street legal. And secondly, given the many potholes in Manhattan, a spitz would probably end shortly after leaving the exhibition hall.
