D he German car buyers are obviously in the best of spirits. Because with a simultaneous increase in the share of private buyers in the overall market, the number of car registrations in October rose by 3.9 percent to 272,855 units. If you multiply this number - roughly - by a factor of eight, the result is the SUV. They gain 30.9 percent over the previous month. The total of 67,925 SUVs and off-road vehicles registered for the first time also represent a paradigm shift on the German market. Because for the first time the off-roaders represent the strongest segment in the market, displacing the compact class in 2nd place.

SUV strongest segment for the first time

This is made possible by the enormous variety and the ever expanding range Model range of manufacturers. In October alone, there were three new additions to the SUV warehouse, the BMW X2, the Hyundai Kona and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which has now swelled to over 90 vehicles. And as already mentioned many times, other successful models such as the Mini Countryman, the Fiat 500X or the Peugeot 5008 are not taken into account because these have been typified by the manufacturers in other car classes and are therefore not included in the list.

The Porsche Cayenne suffered the greatest losses among SUVs in October.

Resounding success however not all have. With a total of 36 SUV models, the table shows a minus compared to the previous month. Their declining popularity cannot be explained solely on the grounds of “big diesels”, even if the Porsche Cayenne clearly brings up the rear with a drop of a worrying -74.4 percent. Because among the models with clearlyThere are also more compact representatives such as the Audi Q3 or the Citroën Cactus at a double-digit loss. Jeep is currently under the wheels as a complete brand, the tried and tested models are weakening strongly and the new Compass (+393 percent) cannot yet compensate for this. Jeep has been one of the few brands to cut back in the course of the year, and that surprisingly significantly: -14 percent in the months from January to October.

Suzuki and Lada - against the current

At least running At sister company Alfa Romeo, where the Stelvio makes the brand that was declared dead not so long ago, more than 50 percent growth. The fact that you can also be successful with a real SUV instead of a fashionable SUV is made clear by the two oldies on the German market: Suzuki Jimny (+9 percent) and Lada Niva (+52 percent) are successfully countering the road trend.

But of course their sales figures do not even approach the values of the real SUV high-flyers. From 22nd place (this time: Toyota CH-R) there are four-digit sales figures. And as in the previous month, the Mercedes GLC pushed past all pursuers to wait behind the long-term winner VW Tiguan in second place. This surprising sales success of the noble compact SUV from Stauttgart is also due to the fleet business. Because with a share of commercial owners of almost 73 percent, the GLC stands out clearly from the environment. For comparison: The third-place Ford Kuga only has 38 percent, the Tiguan 54 percent for commercial customers.

We will show you the exact sales figures and placements of new SUV registrations in October 2017 in our photo show.

Note: The registration statistics are the official information from the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg. The division into the respective classes is carried out by the manufacturer using a key number. The statistics can also show models that are not available on the German market or that are no longer being built. This peculiarity can occur with the KBA statistics if e.g. foreign vehicles are registered in Germany for the first time or vehicles have a new ID number. received.
