T he zigzag course on the new vehicle market is entering the next round . After the surprisingly strong slump in April, there was an equally surprisingly large comeback in May. Compared to May 2016, new registrations were now up by 12.9 percent. A gain that is only shrugged off in the SUV segment, because here the first registrations increased by 31 percent. Manufacturers have of course been looking at this trend, which has persisted for years, when it comes to new developments, and the number of new pretend-as-if models keep getting bigger. Currently nice to look at on a new addition from Opel: The Crossland X is a minivan at heart like its predecessor Meriva, but surfs the SUV wave with fashionable plastic cladding in a jostling look and was also seriously considered by the Rüsselsheim-based company SUV homologated. Entry in May with at least three-digit registration numbers. The same applies to another “SUV” from Opel, the Grandland X. This is noticeable for the first time with a few registrations, but will not be on the market until autumn.

Several new SUVs

The two newcomers from the VW group are not satisfied with these numbers, Seat Ateca and Skoda Kodiaq compete head-to-head in the table in May, which Skoda wins.

Keyword diesel -Crisis: It currently plays into the hands of a manufacturer in particular. With hybrid shares of around 80 percent, Toyota RAV4 (+79 percent compared to May 2016) and Lexus NX (+ 266%) are real shooting stars this year. The new C-HR (currently around 70 percent hybrid share) is even developing into a real bestseller, in May it lands in 21st place among the best-selling SUVs.

But with larger SUVs, there is no way to go for fuel consumption reasons alone Diesel engines are over, accordingly diesel engines continue to dominate in these classes. Also at the undisputed market leader VW, where the Tiguan was currently able to double the registration numbers compared to the same month last year.
