5 48 cars would have been missing to fill the 600,000 : 599,452 off-road vehicles and SUVs are shown in the registration statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority for the past year 2015. And actually this 600,000-unit hurdle was broken anyway. Because models such as the Mini Countryman, Nissan Juke or Fiat 500X are listed in the passenger car category and are not explicitly identified as SUVs; others such as several thousand pickups or the Land Rover Defender, which has since been discontinued, are listed among the trucks. A total of 3.2 million cars were put on the road in 2015.

SUV registration numbers doubled in five years

So a record, again. The segment, which has been generating the best sales among manufacturers for years, has grown again (in 2014 it was around 529,000 SUVs). However, it becomes even more impressive if you look back a few years longer: In 2010, only 295,254 Germans decided to buy a new SUV. Manufacturers would certainly like to see their sales doubling within five years in other segments as well.

December brings another reunion with a few old acquaintances who recently failed to make it onto the podium. Suzuki Grand Vitara, Opel Antara, Land Rover Freelander and Nissan Pathfinder are among them, they appear in our annual review for the last time in the SUV registration statistics.

However, the real highlights of the year come from one in another direction: vehicles that only made their debut in the course of the year and yet ended up high in the table. This feat was not only achieved by Mazda CX-3 and Renault Kadjar, it also applies to SUVs, which received a facelift in 2015 and therefore did not take off until later in the year - the prime examples of this are the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLK /GLC, both of which were renovated in the summer.

SUVs are often the most important models of the brand

It has long been abundantly clear how important SUVs are for individual manufacturers. Dacia, Honda, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Volvo is the long list in alphabetical order: For each of these brands, one SUV is the best-selling model in the stable. At Porsche, more than half of the cars sold in 2015 were SUVs. Yes, we're talking about the sports car icon from Zuffenhausen.

Brands that exclusively or predominantly offered SUVs were therefore able to go well over in 2015Market average are growing, particularly clearly demonstrated by Jeep and Mitsubishi, where growth of over 40 percent was recorded in each case. There is no end in sight, in our annual preview we list 50 new releases for the off-roaders for 2016 alone.

How your favorite SUV performed in 2015 is revealed by ours Picture gallery.

Note: The registration statistics are official information from the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg. The division into the respective classes is carried out by the manufacturer using a key number. The statistics can also show models that are not available on the German market or that are no longer being built. This peculiarity can occur with the KBA statistics if e.g. foreign vehicles are registered for the first time in Germany or vehicles have a new ID number. received.
