5 points that I like about the new 5 Series

  • New enough and very chic

Continuity is for Time of the design trend in the automotive industry - see Audi A4 or Q5. Or the new BMW 7 Series. And now the 5 series too. On the photo. But if you stand in front of it, everything is different: the rear window is flatter, the C-pillar has an additional bead, the trunk lid looks flatter, the bonnet now extends to the kidneys, which in turn appear more plastic in their frame. More like little things, of course. But they distinguish the new generation from the old, in nature 5 Series number 7 is simply chic - and recognizable as a new car. And as a 5 Series: The BMW sedans 3, 5 and 7 Series are not as easily confused as the Mercedes C, E and S Class.

  • Smarter than that 7 Series

A few functions show how fast the progress is that the 5 Series has ahead of the more expensive 7 Series: Lane change and avoidance assistant, intersection and wrong-way warning. And these are just the functions that the 7 Series does not (yet) have. In addition, the better security package for the 5 Series is 300 euros cheaper than the 7 Series (2800 instead of 3100 euros).

And the laser light of the 7 Series? Doesn't need the 5 series. Its LED headlights shine up to 500 meters. For the laser light of the big technology brother, BMW only gives a hundred meters more.

Gesture control has also learned a lot since it was first used in the 7 Series, the driver of a 5 Series can give his car more commands by hand. For example, whether a previously set route guidance should be continued.

  • Sophisticated aerodynamic tricks

One The predecessor already had active air flap control. That means nothing else than that a blind in front of the cooler lets in sometimes more, sometimes less air. So the 5 series slips better through the wind when there is little air requirement and saves a little fuel. In the new model, however, this blind is integrated into the kidneys - it drives sometimes with the kidney closed and sometimes with the kidney open. A detail, but fascinating. The kidney bars themselves are painted black or chrome-plated, depending on the equipment.

  • CleverStart-stop

Start-stop should have annoyed most drivers. In the 5 Series, it no longer immediately switches off the engine at roundabouts and in 30 km /h zones. This makes restarting easier and increases comfort. To do this, the engine management system uses data from traffic sign recognition and navigation. The business navigation system is part of the standard equipment.

  • Low CO2 - even without an electric drive

Aerodynamic fine-tuning and smart start-stop : nice and good. But a Tesla, for example, doesn't need these tricks at all. It drives purely electrically and is therefore locally emission-free. But there is no purely electric 5 Series. Why? Electric cars and combustion bans have only recently been the subject of such intense discussion; the development of a car follows longer cycles. The strategy change at BMW to develop and build conventional series of the core brand with purely electric drives is still very fresh. But apart from that, the 5 Series drives very efficiently - at least according to the standard consumption. According to the NEDC, the 520d gets by with four liters per 100 kilometers. That's 107 grams of CO2. The Efficient Dynamics Edition comes to 102 grams per kilometer. That is not as much as a Tesla Model S emits, if you take the standard range and battery capacity as a basis: The e-car comes to 90 grams of CO2 with the 559 grams of CO2, which according to the German power plant mix causes one kilowatt hour of electricity per kilometer.

From the front, the BMW 5 Series is immediately as New model recognizable: the wider headlights reach to the kidney. It is also a little wider, is steeper and now has a chrome frame. That reminds a little of the 3 series. The side line is reminiscent of its predecessor with its double rebate at the level of the door handles. This makes the 5 Series look familiar and stretched out. The C-pillar, of course with the counter-curvature at the foot of the C-pillar used by Wilhelm Hofmeister for the first time in the New Class, has an additional bead. More important for everyone who gets in at the back: The larger door cutout now leaves more space to get in. Ten millimeters of the 36 millimeter increase in length benefit the passengers in the back seat. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is now 4.94 meters long. The width increased by six millimeters to 1.87 meters. The trunk has also grown, it now holds 530 liters and thus ten liters more than before.

New 5 Series up to 100 kg lighter

For the 520d Efficient Dynamics Edition, BMW specifies a drag coefficient of 0.22, which is on par with the Mercedes CLA as the most streamlined production sedan to date. The other 5 versions slip in the best case with 0.23 to 0.25 by the wind.

The base model is the 520d with 190 hp, according to the standard it should travel 100 kilometers with four liters of diesel. And all of this with very good driving performance: the 520d needs 7.7 seconds from zero to 100 km /h, and it can go up to 237 km /h. The Efficient Dynamics Edition of this model should come to 102 grams of CO2, which is five grams less than the base model.

Diesel with 190 and 265 hp

The second diesel, the 530d, has an output 265 hp and presses 620 Newton meters on the crankshaft. It sprints from standstill to 100 km /h in 5.7 seconds and is electronically braked at 250 km /h. On average, it should consume 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers on the test bench and, with 118 grams of CO2, it remains below the 120 gram limit.

Row six in 530d and 540i

The petrol engines 530i and 540i produce 252 and 340 hp. The 530i is a four-cylinder with a displacement of two liters, it sprints from zero to 100 km /h in 6.2 seconds, reaches 250 km /h and burns 5.4 liters in the NEDC. The preliminary top model 540i has an in-line six-cylinder engine under the bonnet that delivers 34 hp more than the one in the previous 535i. With rear-wheel drive, the sedan takes 5.1 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km /h, with xDrive all-wheel drive it takes 4.8 seconds. Consumption is 6.5 and 6.7 liters.

From March, a few weeks after the market launch on February 11, BMW will be offering three engine variants: the aforementioned 520d Efficient Dynamics Editionwith 102 grams of CO2, the 530e with plug-in hybrid and 46 grams of CO2 and the M550i M Performance with all-wheel drive and 462 hp.

Smarter assistance in the new 5 Series

With technology In the 7 Series, the 5 Series became smarter: Assistance and infotainment can in principle be the same as in the top model - sometimes even more. The optional distance cruise control follows the cars in front, and the driver can now take his hands off the steering wheel more often than before. Before driving on one-way streets and motorway entrances in the wrong direction, the 5 Series warns with the help of camera and navigation data. If the driver disregards a right of way, a warning is displayed and the car applies the brakes in order to shorten emergency braking.

BMW has made the cockpit leaner.

As in the 7 Series, it is now operated with gestures . But the 5 Series can do more: a hand movement is all it takes to continue navigation to a destination that has already been set. The voice control now understands whole sentences. And of course, radio, music, navigation, telephone and vehicle settings can be controlled as before using the iDrive knob. Every 5 Series has a navigation system as standard, which can be upgraded to the Pro version with all functions. The screen is on the dashboard, which has made it a little flatter.

The 10.25-inch screen (8.8-inch series), which can also be used as a touchscreen, shows up to six tiles at the same time - previously it was only possible to watch radio and navigation at the same time. The optional head-up display now has a resolution of 800x400 pixels, displays navigation instructions, warnings, speed limits and music tracks in multiple colors - and then when they are needed.

Programmable seat and steering wheel heating

If you want, you can, as before, order sports or comfort seats instead of standard seats. The comfort variant offers eight optional massage programs that knead the back and buttocks of the driver and front passenger with the help of 20 air chambers. The seat and steering wheel heating are programmable: if the temperature falls below a predetermined value, the seat and steering wheel heating are switched on automatically. A minimum temperature for activating the optionalSeat ventilation can be set. BMW has improved the air conditioning, which can now be equipped with touch controls and scenting, as in the 7 Series.

The new 5 Series should also be quieter: Sound absorbers in the sky should reduce the noise in the interior and improve intelligibility Enable conversations between driver and passengers as well as telephone calls. That is also a step forward, but even the predecessor was not necessarily a loud car.

The new BMW 5 Series is again being manufactured in Dingolfing, but not exclusively. According to 'information from' Automobile Production, between 50,000 and 70,000 units will also roll off the assembly line at Magna Steyr in Graz. The Paceman and Countryman mini models are currently still being manufactured there. BMW signed a follow-up contract with Magna Steyr at the beginning of last year. The available capacities are to be filled with the 5 Series.

Prices for the new BMW 5 Series from 45,200 euros

The price list for the 5 Series G30 starts at 45,200 euros for the 520d with 6-speed -Manual gearbox. A Mercedes E 220d costs around 2000 euros more, but has an automatic transmission as standard - at least the entry-level models are priced at a similar level. BMW charges 54,300 euros for the 530d with 265 hp in-line six-cylinder diesel and eight-speed automatic. The cheapest gasoline engine is the 530i with 252 hp from a turbo four-cylinder, it costs 49,800 euros. The provisional top model M550i xDrive with 462 PS V8 comes to 82,700 euros.
