For Mercedes starts the year 2010 reasonably well. 'In the first quarter we will probably achieve an increase in global sales of more than ten percent,' says Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes. This was primarily due to the great demand for the series E- and S-Class in the US and China markets. 'In the USA we achieved a segment share of 35 percent with the E-Class,' explains Schmidt.

Mercedes is still having problems in Germany

In the luxury segment, Schmidt sees himself as opposed to new competitive models such as the A udi A8 well equipped. The ratio of A8 to S-Class sold would be around one to four. The Sindelfingen plant is benefiting from this and its capacity utilization is now at the upper limit.

In Germany, on the other hand, the brand continues to have problems gaining ground. After a decline of 13.9 percent in 2009, the first two months also got off to a cautious start. 'We started delivering the factory vehicles to our employees late in January,' explains Schmidt. It is also important to improve the positioning of the brand. In future, the core values of perfection, fascination and responsibility will be worked out. With this, Schmidt wants to achieve a result on the German market at the end of the year at the level of 2009, which would correspond to around 283,000 new registrations.
