Mercedes GLS/GLE/CLS/E-Class: Risk of fire in the 48V system

Mercedes is recalling around 52,700 vehicles from various series worldwide due to the risk of fire. The original recall for GLE and GLS has now been extended to some models in the CLS and E-Class series.

The car manufacturer Mercedes is recalling 52,363 vehicles worldwide and 2,459 vehicles in Germany (USA: 21,306 vehicles). Mercedes-Benz AG has determined that in certain vehicles of the GLE and GLS series (BR 167), the screwing of the 48V earth point under the front passenger seat may be too tight. In this case, the cable lug of the ground wire would not be fixed correctly. This could increase the electrical contact resistance at this connection point. As a result, due to the high electrical currents that can flow through this connection, the temperature in this area could rise - which in turn could lead to a fire in the worst case.

As a precautionary measure, the Mercedes-Benz service organization will check the screw connection at the ground point on the affected vehicles and correct it if necessary. The planned visit to the workshop for testing and, if necessary, reworking the screw connection of the ground point will take up to 1.5 hours. Certain GLE/GLS (BR 167) vehicles from the production period from October 2018 to November 2021 are potentially affected worldwide.

A few days after the recall for GLS and GLE, Mercedes is also extending the recall to some models of the CLS and E-Class series the year of construction 2021. Here the screw connection of the cable lug at the 48V ground point of the refrigerant compressor is checked. 343 vehicles are affected worldwide, 96 of them in Germany.

The following Mercedes model series are affected by the recall, especially in the USA:

  • GLE450 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (2,733 vehicles)
  • AMG GLE53 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 12/12/2018 .2021 (3,191 vehicles)
  • GLE580 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (274 vehicles)
  • AMG GLE63 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (624 vehicles)
  • GLS480 from the production period 1/1/2021 to 11/12/2021 (12,046 vehicles)
  • GLS580 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (1,471 vehicles)
  • Maybach GLS600 from the production period 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (229 vehicles) from the AMG GLS.63 production period
  • 11/1/2018 to 11/12/2021 (738 vehicles)
  • The recall can be found at the NHTSA under case number 22V-231, at the KBA under the reference number 011771 and at the manufacturer itself under the code 5491807.,

    Conclusion

Mercedes has to make improvements to around 52,700 vehicles in the GLS, GLE, CLS and E-Class model series worldwide. In certain vehicles from model years 2018 to 2021, incorrect screwing of the cable lug at the 48V ground point could lead to a fire hazard.
