Mercedes F800: technology reduces eye strain
With the servo HMI display, the Mercedes engineers have developed an optimized human-machine interface (HMI) in which the displayed vehicle and vehicle information is displayed via a mirror in the instrument cluster. Thanks to this technology, however, they appear further away and thus relieve the driver's eyes.
The display with the instrument display lies horizontally in the dashboard . A mirror directs the light rays of the display image into the area of the instrument cluster. From there they get to the driver. This extends the viewing distance and the eyes no longer have to switch so much between near and far vision.
Automatic follow-up function in traffic jams
The once again expanded adaptive cruise control should also ensure more safety. As a Distronic Plus, it was already able to control the distance to the vehicle in front, even at very low speeds, right up to a standstill. In the F800, the control has been expanded to include a traffic jam assistant. With this function, the car can also follow the vehicle in front in a sideways direction. The driver no longer has to steer himself; the function of following traffic jams takes on both longitudinal and lateral guidance for him up to a speed of around 40 km /h. The driver can lean back and relax with his hands on the steering wheel. Of course, the driver can override the system at any time. Active steering interventions by the driver are recognized by sensors, the automatic lateral control of the system is deactivated. When the 40 km /h mark is exceededthe lane-keeping steering torque is successively reduced so that the traffic jam assistant switches off gently.
The adaptive cruise control has also been supplemented by a stereo camera for the traffic jam assistant function. The camera and system electronics monitor and analyze the traffic area in front of the vehicle up to around 50 meters ahead. The camera detects both lane markings and the vehicle ahead, which is also measured in terms of its position and width. If the vehicle in front moves within its lane, the car follows it on the basis of the camera measurement data. However, if the vehicle in front leaves the lane or turns right or left, the assistance system limits lateral control to its own lane.
Pre-Safe monitors the entire vehicle environment
E The range of functions of the Pre-Safe security system has also been expanded. Sensors monitor the entire area around the vehicle up to a distance of 60 meters. If an impending collision is detected, the system activates precautionary measures for occupant protection. In the event of an impending rear-end collision, for example, the brakes are activated to reduce the consequences of the accident for the occupants and to prevent the vehicle from being thrown away. But if the driver accelerates to escape the situation, the brakes are released immediately.
