D he new Mercedes CLA is technically based on the A-Class, but with a length of 4.63 meters, is four centimeters longer than the current C-Class and with a height of 1.437 meters is one centimeter flatter than the mid-range bestseller. Visually, the new CLA largely takes up the design of the Concept Style Coupé presented for the first time at Auto China.

The most striking details include the large radiator grille with a central star and a cross louvre, the beefy bonnet and a gently sloping A-pillar. As in the study, the side view is characterized by three lines, the rear area is dominated by the gently sloping roof line, a raised lip on the trunk lid and two rather evil-looking rear lights. With its sleek design and flat silhouette, the CLA achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23, according to Mercedes.

Mercedes CLA uses engines from the A-Class

as a drive source the Mercedes CLA logically the four-cylinder engines of the A-Class, starting with the 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 122 hp (CLA 180). The top engine is the two-liter petrol engine with 211 hp. On the diesel side, the 2.1-liter unit with 170 hp and 350 Nm torque is available. All engines are equipped with a start-stop function and are linked to a six-speed manual transmission. A seven-speed double clutch automatic is available as an option, and for the large petrol and diesel engines, this is even included as standard.

The technical affinity to the A-Class also means that the Mercedes CLA is not like the C- Class has rear-wheel drive, but is driven by the front wheels. The 4Matic all-wheel drive is offered as an option ( More details about the new all-wheel drive can be found here ). Further customization options, both for the exterior and for the interior, are available in five lines and packages.

Chassis can be sporty or comfortable

There are two configurations to choose from for the chassis of the new Mercedes CLA (McPherson front, multi-link rear): comfortable or sporty (optional). In the sporty version, the body moves 20 mm at the front, on theRear axle 15 mm closer to the asphalt. The Mercedes CLA is controlled by electromechanical steering.

In the interior, the Mercedes CLA looks like its two brothers from the compact segment. The round ventilation nozzles, the free-floating infotainment display and all the controls are already familiar from the A- and B-Class. The CLA interior reinforces its premium character with fine details such as the galvanized surfaces or contrasting stitching. Integral seats are used in the front as well as in the rear, while the outer seats are highlighted on the rear bench.

Mercedes CLA with further developed assistance systems

The drowsiness detection system takes care of the safety of the passengers as standard Collision Prevention Assist, which receives its information from radar sensors and warns the driver visually and acoustically of detected obstacles and assists him when braking. According to Mercedes, the already known system has been further developed and now works from a speed of seven km /h. In conjunction with the proximity control system (Distronic Plus), the warning system automatically initiates braking in the event of an impending collision up to 200 km /h. This should allow rear-end collisions to be completely avoided up to a speed of 20 km /h.

Further assistance systems available for the new Mercedes CLA are the lane package with blind spot and lane keeping assistant, high beam assistant and active parking assistant. The infotainment system also offers new functions, completely integrating smartphones and enabling voice control, position transmission and connection to Facebook and Twitter via a special app. Real-time traffic information and internet radio are also available.
