M aserati, like many other luxury car manufacturers, is looking for new niches in them one can grow. They want to have recognized potential in the SUV segment. With the merger of Fiat and Chrysler, the Italians now have access to the Jeep platforms. This means that the Maserati Levante can fall back on the resources of the new Grand Cherokee.

Levante with Maserati engines

However, the Maserati Levante should not become a swaddled Cherokee. According to US media reports, a body largely made of aluminum is used. In terms of design, the Maserati Levante continues the line given by Quattroporte, Ghibli and GranCabrio.

On the drive side, the Italians rely on their own units, which are taken from the Ghibli and Quattroporte models, as well as a turbo diesel. A three-liter V6 biturbo with 410 hp and 550 Nm, a 3.8-liter V8 biturbo with 530 hp and 710 Nm and a three-liter turbo diesel with 275 hp and 600 Nm torque are to be expected. All engines are combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

Production could take place in Italy

According to the original Planning the Maserati Levante should be manufactured parallel to the Grand Cherokee in the USA. However, since the Jeep is in high demand, there is probably no more room for the Levante on its belts. The Maserati production will now take place in Italy after all.

The drive train, the chassis, the brakes and the steering are to be developed in Modena at Maserati. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive.
