W hen the car runs out of space and the family starts nagging, the sports car driver is looking for ways out. He has 3 options. First: give in small and switch to a family van. That sounds like severe depression. Second: looking for an SUV. One like Audi RS Q3 or BMW X5 /X6 M. Third: Buy a sporty station wagon. Why? Because they combine a lot of bang with good space, like SUVs, but at the same time the center of gravity is lower and you don't sit on the second floor.

In our overview we concentrate on the sports suits that the manufacturers deliberately include a sporty label - for example the S and RS models from Audi, the AMG vehicles from Mercedes or Polestar from Volvo. Most of them with fat gasoline engines under the hood. But there are also sporty station wagons for the diesel group.

Compact class with sport suits at a fair price

Entry costs just over 30,000 euros. For this you get a four-cylinder gasoline engine, front-wheel drive and 250 hp packed in a Ford Focus Tournament ST. The EcoBoost motor allows the compact car to accelerate to country road speed in 6.7 seconds. Regardless of whether it is a bulk purchase, a beverage store or a furniture store: It doesn't have to be skimpy. There is enough space with up to 1,516 liters. However, not as much as with the loadmaster in the compact class.

The competition from Skoda has it in the lineup. In different variations. In the meantime, Skoda has even boosted the Octavia RS to 245 hp. In combination with a luggage compartment volume of 610 to 1,740 liters.

The sister companies cannot keep up with that. But the Seat Leon ST Cupra 300 and VW Golf Variant R have other advantages: all-wheel drive, more power, more torque and better acceleration to 100 things. Nevertheless, they do not come close to the strongest of the sports suits in the compact class. It has a star on the bonnet and is cast into a shooting brake body: Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4Matic Shooting Brake with 381 hp from 57,804.25 euros.

Mid-size class already with V8 engines

Mercedes-AMG has cleverly split up its offer. In order to reduce the gap between the standard models and the AMG versions (in terms of performance and price), the portfolio is filled with the 43 models. The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic T-model has a V6 biturbo with a displacement of three liters, from which the station wagon 367 hpsqueezes. Price: 61,850.25 euros. An AMG C 63 T model already plays in a different league. 467 hp cost 78,064 euros. For the S version with 510 hp, which gushes out of a V8 biturbo, you have to shell out over 86,000 euros.

At BMW, the middle class of sports suits is orphaned. On the other hand, Alpina is pounding. With diesel power in the D3 Biturbo Touring. Or with the six-cylinder biturbo petrol engine in the B3 S Biturbo Touring. Audi and Volvo also do nothing and send two sporty station wagons into the middle class race with the S4 Avant and V60 Polestar.

Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo in the upper class

Fight one step over it Mercedes-AMG E 63 4Matic T-Model, Audi RS6 Avant and Alpina B5 Biturbo Touring for the station wagon crown. They excel in performance - and in price. Again, Mercedes-AMG offers a cheaper alternative to its Pampersbomber with up to 612 hp: E 43 4Matic T-model. Same game at Audi with the S6 Avant.

BMW fills the field towards the end of the year. Or better: BMW enriches the field with a super powerful diesel. The six-cylinder diesel in the M550d xDrive Touring draws plenty of energy from four exhaust gas turbos and therefore generates 400 hp from a three-liter displacement. The standard sprint takes 4.6 seconds. The available space: 570 to 1,700 liters.

Porsche has recently been serving the luxury class with the Panamera Sport Turismo. It is available in different performance levels. State of the art is the turbo with 550 hp. The all-wheel drive sweeps from zero to 100 km /h in 3.8 seconds.

In our picture gallery we show you the sportiest station wagons. All data refer to the information provided by the manufacturer.
