'We can help VW expand. We can even create companies together. ' Qatar is the third largest VW shareholder after Porsche Holding and the state of Lower Saxony.

VW is to take over Suzuki and build cars for US customers

Al-Abdullah, VW Supervisory Board member since April, also indicated that Qatar would help the group gain control of the Japanese small car maker Suzuki. However, he did not want to be specific on this point. VW has taken over around 20 percent of Suzuki.

Al-Abdullah expressed criticism of Volkswagen's weak position in the USA. He does not understand that Toyota holds almost 20 percent of the US market and VW not even three. 'You could have 30 percent, but don't build the right cars for US customers. The company has to do more.' The same applies to environmentally friendly technologies. 'VW is already good at developing alternative drives, but that needs to be pushed harder. Such technology must be affordable.'
