2 010 Argentina is represented in Formula 1 again. Jose Maria Lopez tries to achieve new successes for the country with the great motorsport tradition. The gaucho, born in Rio Tercero in 1983, will not have an easy time of it. Not only the pilot is new but also his team. Lopez wants to assert himself together with USF1.

First successes for Lopez in Formula Renault

The racing career of little 'Pechito', as he is called in Argentina, began like many of his Colleagues in karting. In 2001 he started his career in the big monoposto cars in Formula Renault in Europe. In his second year he became champion of the Italian Formula Renault series, even leaving Robert Kubica behind. In the 2003 Formula Renault Eurocup, Lopez also secured the title in the end.

Equipped with many advance praise, he entered the Formula 3000 in 2004, which he finished sixth. The rise to the newly founded GP2 in 2005 was only a matter of form. The ninth place for the DAMS team was more of a step backwards. A move to Team Super Nova in 2006 did not bring the desired success. In the end he finished tenth and retired from GP2.

Return to Argentina

After a guest appearance in the American Le Mans Series, Lopez returned to Argentina. In 2007 he entered the highest national touring car series there. In his second year he won the title, which he successfully defended in 2009. Thanks to numerous sponsors, Lopez secured the ticket for the 2010 Formula 1 season during the winter break. In February 2010, the young man signed with USF1. The talent is not only supported by private donors but can also fall back on state funding.
