F ür the amount of the severance payments is based on the formula: Age multiplied with the company in years multiplied by the monthly salary divided by 35. However, the severance payment is limited to a maximum of 250,000 euros, and a maximum of 24 years of service would be included.

1,800 jobs are to be cut in Bochum

The Bochum Opel works council boss Rainer Einenkel criticized the severance offer. 'We would have wished for a lot more,' he told the 'WAZ'. In previous years there were higher severance payments at Opel. This time the formula was not negotiated with the works council. Opel is currently struggling with overcapacity and therefore wants to cut 1,800 of around 5,000 jobs in Bochum by the end of next year.

Transfer companies will be set up from September, and 650 employees could leave this year, the spokesman said. Overall, the carmaker, which together with its British sister company Vauxhall made a loss of 637 million dollars in the first half of the year, wants to cut 8,000 jobs across Europe, less than half of them in Germany. The exact numbers are still being negotiated.
