Investigation: Mercedes Sprinter could start rolling

NHTSA is currently investigating eleven incidents in the United States in which Mercedes Sprinter vehicles drove off despite being parked.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating some 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans designed for use as Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) delivery vehicles or as ambulances. The problem: after parking, they roll off by themselves. There are currently eleven reports on such events. According to this, the vehicles should have rolled off by themselves in the Auto-P function. So far, eight accidents including one injury have been recorded on February 23, 2021 in Monroeville, Pennsylvania (NHTSA number: 11404893).

,Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (VS30)/2500/3500 and 4500 are affected - each from 2019. In a complaint dated March 16, a driver in Pittsburgh stated that he parked the vehicle and then just " rolled backwards down a hill and crashed into another vehicle. It could have killed someone... This is my second Amazon-branded Mercedes Sprinter accident with the exact same faulty brake actuation system." It is not known how many vehicles have this problem. There are currently around 19,000 sprinters on the streets of the USA.

Conclusion

In the USA, the NHTSA is currently investigating eleven incidents in which a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter started rolling by itself - despite the automatic transmission being in park.
