IAA 1993: A roll bar annoys VW customers

Overview of trade fair highlights
Subscriptions & booklets

VW is investing heavily in its workhorse: three new highlights are on the I AA booth to marvel at. The largest crowd is formed around the new Golf convertible, which follows the strawberry basket after 14 years of construction. It is often criticized that VW has taken over the fixed bracket from its predecessor - why the handle stays on is the secret of VW - and the controllers. After all, those interested can now choose between three petrol engines from 75 to 115 hp.

IAA 1993: VW supports its bestseller with new variant (s)

Family councilors in particular are happy about the new station wagon called Variant. For the first time a Golf is allowed to put on a backpack. With a trunk volume of 466 to 1,425 liters and a payload of 460 to 500 kilograms, there is enough space for a family of five.

The third new Golf product is the Ecomatic with automatic swing use. Nothing more than an early start-stop semi-automatic. There is no clutch pedal. As soon as the foot moves off the accelerator, the engine switches off. At the traffic light, the engine is switched off after five seconds and starts again by engaging first gear or reverse gear. The electronic control system called Digiswing even detects when the driver is rolling downhill and does not need any power. And turns off the engine. However, if the braking force of the motor is to be used, the driver can intervene by pressing a button on the wiper lever and force the motor to engage. The engine chosen is the 64 HP naturally aspirated diesel, which, thanks to the complex technology, should achieve a consumption of 5.5 liters.

End of a free spirit: The new Saab 900

Under the aegis of the parent company General Motors, the successor to the legendary Saab 900, which was built for over 15 years and with its 8Soft Turbo technology, was pioneering. Of course, a successor has a very difficult time for such an individualist, the new 900 tries its best and cites its predecessor with many details. Ignition lock behind the gearshift lever, similar, albeit unevenly softened, body shape - there wasn't much left of the feeling of sitting in an aircraft cockpit. On the basis of the Vectra-A floor assembly, however, a worthy successor was created - at least viewed very soberly. Has securityStill a high priority, space, processing quality and payload are good. Only that certain something is missing.

Audi is casting the shadow of the A8 ahead

The body shines in polished aluminum of the upper-class model from Ingolstadt, presented as the Audi 300. The shiny light metal is used for many chassis components and the body. Even with all-wheel drive, the A8 introduced in 1994 should weigh less than the 7-series BMW and the S-Class from Mercedes. The 3.4-liter V8 diesel with direct injection is said to have unrivaled fuel consumption with a third mix of just 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

Thanks to a cooperation with Porsche, Audi is bringing the RS 2, the most powerful station wagon on the market. The engine of the S2, which has been increased by 85 hp in Zuffenhausen, develops 315 hp. The powerful braking system from Porsche ensures astonishing deceleration values, the aprons that are pulled down far for the right macho appearance. Around 2,000 copies are said to be available for purchase for 98,900 marks each.

BMW has given its 5 Series Touring the 286 hp V8, which as the 540i marks the top performance. The small two-valve engines finally get a chain instead of the toothed belt for the camshaft drive and thus gain two horsepower.

Citro├źn presents Xantia at the IAA 1993

The French are reviving the middle class with the new Xantia use the AX to show what is possible in terms of fuel consumption with lightweight construction and aerodynamic optimization. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic as door skins, bonnet, roof and fenders save 100 kilograms, the underbody is clad and brings the drag coefficient together with aerodynamic spoilers and hubcaps to 0.28 instead of 0.32. The gears are translated longer and the friction losses in the engine are reduced. The result is a consumption of just 3.4 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.

New convertibles from Fiat and Peugeot

In addition to VW with its Golf Cabrio, there are two alternatives, both without a roll bar. Pininfarina was signed for the Peugeot 306 convertible. Successful, as you can see for yourself at the French stand in 19991. Formally, the open version of the golf competitor is undeniably successful. Two petrol engines with 101 and 121 hp are available. The Punto Cabrio drawn by Bertone greets you from Italy. The Punto appears on the scene as the successor to the Fiat Uno and takes it up with its four different body versions, six engines and five equipment lines.

Ford builds on safety - and on the two-stroke engine

All Ford models are equipped with an airbag as standard. All? No. The Fiesta still has to do without, but Mondeo, Scorpio and Probe have a second on top. Only those are completely newstrengthened model versions of Escort, Mondeo and Scorpio and the Nissan Terrano II brother, which is sold under the name Maverick.

The Cologne-based company is causing a stir with its two-stroke studies Sub-B-Concept-Car and Synthesis 2010 You actually dared to block the old stinkers who just seemed to be finally overcome with the swan song on the Trabant. In both studies, a 1.2-liter two-stroke engine with 82 hp is used, which should consume less than five liters of mixture. The Sub-B has different entry concepts as a gimmick on the driver and passenger side. While the driver enters the interior through a conventional door, a sliding door opens for the front and rear passengers. The Synthesis was developed by Ford USA and is said to be 98 percent recyclable.

With the Tigra, Opel is showing a small runabout that gives the interior an airy feeling with its large glass surfaces. The Tigra is clearly aimed at young people, as is the Roadster study - also based on the Corsa. The new top version is the Corsa GSi 16V with 109 hp.

Nissan Terrano II, Mitsubishi L200, and a Libero

Mazda is showing the new contribution to the upper middle class, the Xedos 9, at the IAA , which will compete against the BMW 5 Series, Audi 100 and the Mercedes E-Class. There is a choice of two six-cylinders with 143 or 167 hp. Nissan presents the second generation of the Terrano and two studies, the AQ-X, which can be powered either by a lean-burn engine or a direct-injection diesel. The sports car of the future called AP-X is strongly reminiscent of its base, the 300 ZX.

At the Mitsubishi stand, the first thing that catches the eye is the new L200 pick-up, which is based on the chassis of the Pajero and next to it There is still an impressive loading area ready for five seats. Much more spectacular, however, are the two HSR IV and ESR studies. The HSR IV is a small roadster whose chassis has a few surprises in store. It is completely adjustable, even the inclination of the suspension struts can be varied. A new safety feature monitors the driver's blink frequency and intervenes by braking if a minute's sleep is imminent.

The second study plays the hybrid theme in a futuristic form. The ESR is like a boiled egg on its way through the esophagus. The drag coefficient, however, is impressive: 0.25. There are real portals to the side, the front doors fold up high, the rear sliding doors give way to the rear - free from the B-pillar. A hybrid drive with a 92 hp electric motor provides propulsion. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder with just 29 hp recharges the batteries. With 620 miles at a constant 25 miles per hour, an enormous range is specified. 320 miles should be possible purely electrically. The stated maximum speed of 200 km /h is even more amazing.

Subaru shows at the IAA 1993 the new Libero with 54 hp -Three-cylinder in the rear. Toyota is expanding the Lexus luxury series with the GS 300 downwards.
