This message should please the Opel fan base, as it has been waiting since the end of production of the O pel Calibra in 1997 a successor to the 4.49 meter long sports coupé. With the new edition of the Calibra, the brand with the lightning bolt could attack the BMW 3 Series Coupé, Audi A5 and the new Mercedes CLC, which the Swabians will present in 2013.

Opel Calibra OPC with around 325 hp and all-wheel drive

As the basis for the new Opel Calibra will serve the mid-range model Insignia, with which the new Rüsselsheim will also share the engines. The sports coupe should also be available with diesel engines. An OPC version is planned as the sporty top model, which should have all-wheel drive and the well-known 2.8-liter V6. The latter has 325 hp in the Opel Insignia OPC.

According to GM Europe boss Nick Reilly, the design of the new Opel will be Calibra based on the Opel GTC Concept study that Opel presented at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Reilly has not yet given more details about the new family member.

Calibra as an emergency vehicle for DTM entry?

The Opel Calibra was built from 1990 to 1997. It was available with four- and six-cylinder engines that mobilized between 115 and 204 hp. The Opel Calibra 2.0i Turbo also had all-wheel drive. The Calibra celebrated numerous motorsport successes in the German Touring Car Championship and the International Touring Car Championship (ITC). Among other things, Manuel Reuter became the last ITC champion in 1996 at the wheel of the Opel Calibra.

The announcement of a new edition of the Calibra is fueling speculation about a new DTM entry by Opel. Allegedly, the Rüsselsheim-based company is said to have already worked out a concept for entry into the German Touring Car Masters for 2012. The new Calibra could serve as an ideal emergency vehicle.
