After the renewed cancellations of the Geneva Motor Show for 2022 and 2023, the future of the fair lies in Qatar. The event has now been precisely scheduled for next year.
After cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to Corona, the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) was supposed to take place again from February 19th to 27th, 2022 at Lac Léman in Geneva. In October 2021, however, the organizer surprisingly announced that the 2022 event would also have to be canceled, but immediately added that they wanted to come back even bigger in 2023. In April 2022, the information followed that the fair will take place from February 14th to 19th, 2023. But now the backtrack is coming. , "Due to the uncertainties in the world economy and the geopolitical situation, as well as the risks related to the evolution of the pandemic, the organizers have decided to focus exclusively on planning the event in Doha in 2023", said Maurice Turrettini, President of the Foundation "Comité permanent du Salon international de l'automobile de Genève".
Geneva fair in Qatar takes place
The cancellation comes as no surprise to insiders. Even in the run-up to the planned 2022 Motor Show, the organizers were optimistic for a long time - just a few days before the cancellation, it was announced that there were 60 well-known exhibitors. It is currently unclear how many car manufacturers and suppliers had already confirmed for the 2023 edition. "For the brands that wanted to take part in Geneva, the fans and the loyal visitors of our Geneva show, we regret that we cannot organize this traditional event," the statement continues.
The first date of the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar has meanwhile been confirmed. The first edition of GIMS Qatar will run from 5th to 14th October 2023, coinciding with the F1 GP which is dated 8th October. The "Geneva International Motor Show Qatar" takes place at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) and several other decentralized venues. This fair is to be held every two years.

In 2020, 2021 and 2022 car fans already had to do without the Geneva Motor Show due to the corona. Then the 2023 edition was also canceled at short notice, with reference to the geo political situation, the pandemic demic and the world economy. Obviously, these "world crises" do not apply to Qatar as a location. Let's not fool ourselves: The classic car show was dead before the pandemic and the attempt to reinterpret the topic was also unsuccessful - see IAA. The assumption is now obvious that the Geneva Motor Show 2024 will not take place either and that would mean the end of the location once and for all. The "GIMS" label may now continue to "live" in Qatar as part of a travel destination offensive.
