D he Ford Transit is one of the panel van veterans , looks back on over 50 years of history. In 2019, the next generation of the van will come with numerous innovations, a (mild) hybrid diesel and a large number of safety assistance systems. Lane assistant, pre-collision assist with pedestrian recognition and the speed limiter with traffic sign recognition are part of it. Ford has added a useful trailer function to the Blind Spot Assist and its cross traffic warning (important when maneuvering backwards). This function can detect other road users to the side or behind the transit over a length of up to ten meters, as the system extends the monitoring of the blind spot to the trailer.Availability is not yet available. The technology is known from other such units, a belt-driven starter generator is used in a 48-volt sub-network with a small buffer battery, which can generate additional thrust and generate energy in overrun mode. On the other hand, the freedom of choice in terms of drive types is retained; depending on requirements, the Ford Transit will also be available in the future with front, rear and all-wheel drive. According to Ford, five wheelbases, three roof heights and the various designs from the chassis to the panel van to the flatbed truck add up to over 450 variants.
The new Ford Transit will be built in Turkey at the Ford Kocaeli plant, a joint venture with the Turkish manufacturer Otosan. The annual production capacity there is to be expanded by 40,000 to 330,000 units in the future. The smaller Transit Custom also comes off the assembly line at Ford-Otosan. The new Ford Transit is scheduled to go on sale in Germany in mid-2019, prices have not yet been announced.
