B both are icons. In the US and outside of the states. Both have been dueling since 1966. So for almost half a century. With the exception of 2002 to 2009 when Chevrolet temporarily did not have the Camaro in its range. Because sales had declined, the focus of production was shifted towards SUVs and the F-platform was outdated.

Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro as movie stars

And both muscle cars are movie stars. The Ford Mustang made its film debut in 1964 in the film 'The Gendarme of Saint Tropez'. Countless other roles followed later. For example in 'Bullitt' with Steve McQueen at the wheel of a 68 Mustang GT.

His eternal rival has been enjoying great movie star moments since 2007 - as an 'Autobot' named Bumblebee in the action series 'Transformers' . At first, Bumblebee was an outdated, scruffy, and rusty second-generation 1977 Camaro. In short: a junk truck. It later became a remarkable and modern muscle car.

For Chevrolet, the role in Transformers paid off. The great advertising effect fueled the re-edition of the Camaro from 2009. And made it a real Mustang opponent. In 2014, Chevrolet sold 86,297 models in the USA. Ford lagged behind with 82,635. In 2015 the picture turned. It stands at 68,290 to 42,593 for Ford after the first half of the year. Thanks to the new sixth generation Mustang. Chevrolet will not follow suit with its sixth generation until the fourth quarter of 2015.

New Mustang versus new Camaro: Who is ahead? Even if the data on the Camaro is still sparse, we dare to make a first comparison of the two legends.

The design of the two muscle car classics

The Ford looks Mustang with its long hood the more elegant. The Camaro makes the more powerful and muscular impression. Both are exactly 4.784 meters long and the Camaro is 1.9 centimeters narrower (1.916 to 1.897 meters); but the Chevy is 3.3 centimeters lower (1.381 by 1.348 meters).

Neither of the two pony cars smiles like a Mazda MX-5. Headlights, grille and contoured bonnet give them an 'evil' look. When viewed from the side, the Camaro has a high waistline. The windows, which had already caused poor all-round visibility in the previous models, are correspondingly flat.

The rear of both cars is quite high.Fastback style. Even in the sixth generation, the Mustang retains its multi-split rear lights. This time with LED bars. The Camaro has flat, wide lights here. While the Camaro runs on 18 to 20 inch wheels, the Mustang gallops on 19 inch rims.

Engine /transmission of the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro

Ford and Chevrolet offer for their muscle Cars offer six drive configurations each. Three different engines - from the four-cylinder turbo to the naturally aspirated V8 - can be combined with two different transmissions. Either a manual switch or an automatic switch.

In its sixth generation, the Ford Mustang is officially marketed in Germany for the first time. Previously, the field was left to free importers. In this country, the forefather of the pony car class is only sold with the 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo or with the 5.0-liter V8. The 3.7-liter V6 with its 304 hp and 380 Nm is reserved for the USA.

The EcoBoost four-cylinder with variable valve control and direct injection has a peak of 317 hp and 432 Nm. At highway speed, the four-cylinder should fire the Mustang in 5.8 seconds. According to the manufacturer, the end is at 234 km /h. In connection with the six-speed gearshift, Ford mentions eight liters of fuel consumption, while the automatic should make the Mustang 1.8 liters more thirsty.

The V8 logically swallows even more: 13.5 liters per 100 kilometers if it is is manually zapped through the six gears. 12 liters, if the six-speed automatic can run. In the convertible version, the fuel consumption goes up a bit - regardless of which engine is connected to which transmission.

With the V8 units, however, what counts most is performance. 421 PS (in USA: 441 PS), 524 Nm, Vmax of 250 km /h and 0-100 in 4.8 seconds: This is how the new Ford Mustang throws the gauntlet down to the Camaro. And how does Chevy answer?

Specifications and prices for the Camaro, which will heat up in Europe from summer 2016, are unfortunately not yet available. In the US, it will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year. The top engine is the 6.2-liter V8 familiar from the Corvette, which has been slightly modified for installation in the Camaro. For example on the exhaust manifold. The V8 develops 461 hp and 617 Nm. Point for the Camaro. Chevrolet has not yet released consumption or sprint values.

Another plus point: the new eight-speed automatic. In the Z06 it not only shifts well. Together with the weight reduction of at least 90 kilograms, consumption should have dropped significantly thanks to it. Chevrolet speaks of five percent. In the old model, the consumption of the V8 was 13.1 liters (six-speed automatic) per 100 km. With the new one, you can count on 12.5 liters.

In addition to the automatic variant, Chevy customers also get a manual six-speed gearbox. As anotherThe engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo (279 hp, 400 Nm) - the Ford looks more modern. The V6 in the Mustang, on the other hand, sounds a bit like the discontinued model, while the Chevy gets more power from its 3.6-liter (340 PS, 385 Nm) and can even come up with cylinder deactivation.

Chassis /Weight - Mustang gets independent suspension

Chevrolet is aggressively promoting the technical advances on the Camaro. At least 90 kilograms are supposed to have worked off the muscle car. 12 kilograms alone from the use of aluminum on the axles and 4.2 kilograms from a new aluminum dashboard (previously steel). 350 hours are said to have been worked in the wind tunnel: for better wind slippage, less lift and better cooling.

The new Chevrolet Camaro is based on the Alpha platform - like the new Cadillac ATS. If the 90 kilo weight loss is correct, the Camaro with V8 would weigh around 1,679 kilograms. The old generation weighs 1,769 kilograms (with six-speed automatic). For comparison: the new Ford Mustang with its V8 and six-speed automatic transmission hauls around 1,732 kilograms. The Mustang has not slimmed down. Despite the hood and fenders made of aluminum.

Independent wheel suspension on the rear axle, which the Mustang now has for the first time, has been known to the Chevrolet Camaro since its fifth generation. Improvements have been made for the upcoming muscle car. With the aim of sharpening the handling and reducing the unsprung masses. For the top version SS, Chevrolet comes up with a standard Magnetic Ride damper system, which is supposed to detect the road conditions a thousand times per second and adjusts the shock absorbers accordingly.

We have already tried the chassis tuning on the Mustang: The body sways in auto motor und sport tester Alexander Bloch says, 'otherwise the chassis is a huge step forward from its predecessor. Everything looks much more precise, more light-footed and more directional on undulating roads '.

Ford also lend a hand on the front axle. It is now tighter. The electric power steering should also have a positive influence on driving behavior. In terms of weight distribution, the Mustang is slightly front-heavy (52:48 with four-cylinder, 53:47 with V8). If the Camaro comes into balance here, that would be an advantage for him.

Interior - modern or still plastic?

In the interior, both rivals have made a leap forward. The surfaces and controls still look more rustic than those of German manufacturers. Nevertheless, a ride in noble pastures succeeds. Analogue and easy to read instruments shape the picture in the Mustang. IconicToggle switches provide the right feeling. A large, standard 8-inch touchscreen is enthroned on the center console and can be used to operate the SYNC 2 communication and entertainment system. Depending on the variant, the passengers can sit down on Recaro seats.

In the Camaro, in contrast to the Mustang, the driver grips a steering wheel with a flattened bottom and, if desired, looks at a digital instrument panel, which can be configured as required lets - for example with navigation instructions. An 8-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet MyLink on the center console is also optional.

The Americans have also come up with a few nice gimmicks. The designers attached a ring around the air vents that can be used to regulate the temperature. This eliminates the need for switches. A charging mat for inductive charging of the cell phone can be installed behind the center console. Chevy also offers interior lighting with 24 selectable colors. Ford holds against it with projection lights in the exterior mirrors that let the horse gallop across the asphalt.

V8 power for around 40,000 euros

Muscle cars offer a lot of performance, but stay priced the carpet. The new Mustang is available in Germany from 37,000 euros. With the V8 under the hood, it’s more expensive by 5,000 euros. Still an amazing offer. No prices are known for the new Camaro. The old model with a 6.2-liter V8 cost from 39,990 euros. It can be assumed that the newcomer will sort itself into the Mustang regions.
