Two goals are clear differentiated, visually independent and brand-specific lightweight roadster with rear-wheel drive. Mazda and Alfa Romeo will each use their own engines for their model variants. The project envisages that both vehicles will be manufactured in the Mazda plant in Hiroshima /Japan. Production for Alfa Romeo is scheduled to start in 2015.

The final agreement is expected to be signed in the second half of 2012. Mazda and Fiat have also agreed to look into further opportunities for cooperation in Europe.

The Spider tradition at Alfa started in 1966. Until 1993, the Italians always had a rear-wheel drive roadster in their range. From 1994, the Spider was switched to a front-wheel drive platform. The Spider was completely discontinued in 2010.

Mazda started the renaissance of small, sporty roadsters in 1989 with the rear-wheel drive MX-5. The classic is now in its third generation.
