This was announced by Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne on Friday (November 26th) in Turin at. Marchionne has also headed Chrysler since Fiat joined the US automaker. Fiat holds 20 percent of Chrysler.

Production capacity for the US market

If this plan is approved, production at the Mirafiori plant could reach up to 280,000 vehicles annually, Marchionne said. More than 50 percent of this, including the SUVs called Jeep branded SUVs and the Alfa Romeos, will be destined for the non-European market, especially the US.

The Fiat boss announced this plan in talks with the Unions that he wants to convince of more flexible working hours and contracts. For Marchionne, this is a condition for the announced investment of 20 billion euros in Italy. There are currently around 5,800 Fiat workers at work in Mirafiori. They produced around 178,000 cars in 2009.
