Ferrari recall: brake problems due to old cover

Ferrari is recalling 105,988 vehicles worldwide due to brake problems in almost every model series. Three accidents have so far been attributed to the faulty lid. Now the dates for Germany are also fixed.

The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has the car manufacturer Ferrari in Germany recall 10,850 vehicles from the production years 2005 to 2022. The affected sports cars are equipped with an incorrectly designed brake fluid reservoir cap, which may prevent pressure equalization. This can lead to a partial or total loss of braking ability. The fact that the recall affects vehicles from 2005 as well as recently produced sports cars suggests that the component is the same. In other words: the cover, which is now at least 17 years old, can also be found in current sports cars.

When the amount of brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir decreases by approximately 50% of the maximum level of the reservoir, a warning light will appear on the vehicle's dashboard. In addition, on newer models, a message will appear on the vehicle's dashboard stating: "Brake fluid level low, drive slowly to dealer". On certain models, an acoustic buzzer will also sound, if available.

So far, the KBA has recorded three accidents that can be traced back to the incorrectly designed lid.

In Germany, the models California, Berlinetta, La Ferrari Aperta, Lusso, Monza, Pista, Portofino and Scalglietti are affected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is much more detailed in its explanations than the German KBA. Here is the NHTSA list:

These models are affected by the recall:

  • Ferrari 430 (in the US: from the production period 03/16/2005 to 09/25/2010)
  • Ferrari 488 Pista (in the USA: from the production period 01/01/2019 to 09/11/2020)

  • Affected: worldwide: 105,988; United States: 23,555; Germany: 10,850 vehicles

The repair consists of replacing the brake fluid reservoir cap and updating the software in the affected vehicles. Ferrari is notifying all affected vehicle owners to warn them of this issue and ask them to contact an authorized Ferrari dealer. As soon as the warning message "Brake fluid low" appears on the display, the driver should pull off the road and then contact Ferrari roadside assistance and be towed to the nearest Ferrari dealership.

The recall can be found at the KBA under the reference number 011659 and the manufacturer code RC78. NHTSA is conducting the recall at 22V-536.

    Conclusion

Ferrari has to make improvements to 105,988 vehicles in almost every model series worldwide. Brake problems may occur on certain vehicles.
