D a renewable energies in Germany only reach a share of 20 percent, electric cars also cause considerable CO2 emissions, auto motor und sport has calculated. This also applies to the drivers of electric cars who supposedly only use green electricity. As a rule, green electricity is only allocated to customers on a balance sheet, so one can only free oneself virtually from the emissions burden the generation of electricity

This is why auto motor und sport has calculated the actual total emissions for the Fisker Karma electric car and the Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle based on the German electricity mix. After that, Fisker's promise that the karma emits zero grams of CO2 is far from reality. The electric sports car consumes 32.8 kWh /100 km, which is more than twice as much as the best electric cars. In pure electric mode it emits 162 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.

The Prius does significantly better than the Karma, emitting 106 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer with the German electricity mix. That is only 17 grams more than officially stated by Toyota.

In its calculations, auto motor und sport took into account the current electricity mix in Germany, which averages 494 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour. In federal states that are heavily charged with electricity from coal, the load is even significantly higher: in Hamburg at 502 grams per kilowatt hour, in North Rhine-Westphalia even at 654 grams. Due to the higher proportion of nuclear power in southern Germany, the load per kilowatt hour in Baden-W├╝rttemberg is only 327 grams.
