Daimler invests billions: main plant in Untertürkheim is modernized

Z um Untertürkheim's future portfolio will include hybrid drives and the production of fuel cell systems. In a first step, from June 1, 2015, Untertürkheim will be responsible for an operating facility at the Nabern location in the greater Stuttgart area, where the assembly of the fuel cell system will take place.

More modern engines from Untertürkheim

The production of engines, transmissions, axles and components is being comprehensively realigned and capacities expanded. The foundry in Esslingen-Mettingen and the forge in Untertürkheim are and will remain an integral part of the plant. In addition, the assembly capacities for engines at the Untertürkheim location will be increased significantly. The plant will expand its engine portfolio with two new gasoline units and a new four-cylinder diesel engine. In terms of transmissions, the plant will concentrate on the exclusive production of rear automatic transmissions and will set up additional assembly lines in the coming years. For this purpose, further investments in the billions are planned in the coming years.

In return for the investments, the employees have agreed to increased flexibility and the outsourcing of parts of production. This should save a three-digit million amount by 2020.

Around 18,700 people are employed at the main plant in Untertürkheim. Around 1.75 million vehicles were manufactured there in 2014. As part of the Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy, Mercedes-Benz plans to continue to plan significantly higher production figures in the medium term and thus secure jobs at the Untertürkheim location in the long term.
