Cordless high-pressure cleaner in the test: Get rid of the Sahara dust

Pressure washers are ideal for cleaning up the remains of Sahara dust and blood rain. But does that also apply to the models with rechargeable batteries? In our test with ten devices from two categories, not all of the cleaners were able to convince.

🏆 The winners at a glance:

  • Test winner in the category High-pressure cleaner is the Kärcher K 2 Battery . Cleaning performance and processing are top here - only the loading speed leaves a lot to be desired. The quick charger with additional battery is recommended here.
  • Test winner in the Medium-pressure cleaner category is the Gardena Aqua Clean 24/18 V . Very good handling and the individual nozzle setting characterize this device.
  • Together with the application technicians from the Dr. O. K. Wack Chemie GmbH from Ingolstadt and its sister magazine MOTORRAD tested the high-pressure cleaners at auto motor und sport. Expert support was also provided by the expert organization KÜS. The focus of the test was the user-friendliness and ease of installation of the high-pressure cleaner. In addition, the devices, which were all bought in stores, had to prove in a precisely defined test setup how far they could withstand the test dirt from the care product specialist Dr. O. K. Wack consisting of soot, oil and pigment dirt, with which the dirt of the street was simulated, could clean off the tiles. In addition to the cleaning performance, the spray pattern and noise development were also included in the evaluation. Battery life and charging time also played a role. In addition to four high-pressure cleaners with a working pressure of 70 to 110 bar, six medium-pressure cleaners with a working pressure of up to 25 bar were tested.

    High-pressure cleaner

Kärcher K 2 Battery (high-pressure cleaner up to 110 bar)

The device is worth its money: The spray pattern is even and the water jet is powerful - so stubborn dirt doesn't stand a chance. The digital display, which provides precise information about the capacity and charging time of the battery, is also good. Not so good: the charger included. It takes around eight hours for a full battery. Therefore our tip: the fast charger from the accessories.

  • Shine without a power connection

We live in a time when everything has to work wirelessly, i.e. every electrical device. Recently, even battery-powered high-pressure cleaners have been on the shelves of hardware stores. Which immediately raises the question of what benefits these variants should bring. Vendors advertise that they can clean cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and boats. That may be true, but the question remains how well they do it.

Before talking about their performance, let's look at the flexibility of the devices. With some models, no water connection is necessary, since a storage tank is included in the scope of delivery. Even an adapter for the PET bottle is not uncommon, as is a suction hose that can be used to draw water from a bucket or other container. It all sounds promising, but are the battery cleaners worth their money?

    There are two device classes

In order to be able to classify the devices correctly, a little basic knowledge is required: The battery variants are offered as medium-pressure cleaners up to 25 bar and as high-pressure cleaners up to 110 bar. That sounds like a lot, but it is little compared to the cleaners for the socket. Here, 100 bar devices belong to the entry-level class, which is more than sufficient for at home. The battery cleaners should also be sufficient - even those with only 25 bar.

By the way, the basic structure of the battery devices is no different than that of the wired representatives: An electric motor drives a piston pump that puts water under pressure. But pressure alone should not count when buying the product. The throughput also tells you what the cleaner can do. The higher the amount of water, the better.

The good devices in this test are around 300 or 200 liters per hour. That's a lot, but very little compared to a garden hose. Up to 3500 liters of water can flow through this per hour. Working with a modern high-pressure cleaner is therefore an environmentally friendly thing.

The interaction of the high-pressure pump and the nozzle is also decisive for the cleaning performance, but this is not so easy to check when buying. The fact is that as the price increases, so does the quality. Because the manufacturers need a high level of production technology in order to produce good jet nozzles - as is well known, that costs money.

The drive is also about costs. A so-called universal motor is often installed, such as that found in cordless screwdrivers. Advantage of the drives: cheap, compact, light. Disadvantage: loud and limited in their lifespan. Such electric motors are not designed for much more than 80 to 100 hours net operating time. It doesn't sound like much, but if you blast your car ten times a year for 15 minutes each time, you can count on a service life of 32 to 40 years.

It is important that users do not confuse high-pressure cleaners with steam jets. Hot water cleaners are not offered in the cordless class. In addition, one should be aware of the limited field of application. The battery sets the limit, which is due to the capacity of the power dispenser. Between 2.5 and 5.0 Ah are offered, which is enough for runtimes of up to 20 minutes. That's enough to wash a car. With runtimes under 10 minutes, however, it can get tight.

    It depends on the battery

Chargers are included in the scope of delivery, but often only in a simple version. Take the Kärcher K 2 Battery, for example: it takes around eight hours to charge the battery – with the fast charger included in the accessories, it only takes around 130 minutes. A second battery can be the solution, but at 180 euros it is not cheap. Advantage: It can also be used for other Kärcher devices.

Bosch shows where the standard battery is headed. Under "Power for all", a cross-brand alliance was created for 18-volt batteries, which also includes Gloria and Gardena. The power storage from the Bosch screwdriver also fits into their cleaner, which has an impact on the price - without a battery, the large devices often cost less than 200 euros, the small ones around 100 euros. Another way to save is by comparing prices. The amounts vary by up to 30 percent.

The question remains, which is the better buy - cleaner with high or medium pressure? The small devices are sufficient for vehicle washing; with a larger version you almost have an all-rounder.

The water jet should not be neglected

Next, when operating the spray gun, the user notices whether the designers have made an effort or whether only simple standard supplied goods are used - triggering force, triggering point and dosability determine whether working with the pressure washer is fun. In terms of effectiveness, the nozzle outlet plays a role, among other things. It can consist of two leaves, the distance between which can be varied by turning the nozzle housing. Sounds good, but it isn't in practice if the result is an uneven and not cleanly adjustable flat jet. As the test shows, a clearly defined, non-adjustable flat jet is often much better. Incidentally, the dirt blaster supplied with some devices is a rotating point jet, which is rather unsuitable for use on cars due to its strength. Anyone who wants to care for concrete stone slabs in the garden or in the yard will appreciate this part.

    Car wash at home

There is no express ban on car washing on the doorstep, but as is so often the case in Germany, the rules are interpreted differently from city to city. However, one rule of thumb applies everywhere: whether the vehicle can be cleaned in front of the front door depends on whether the waste water produced can get into the sewage system or open water. That must not be, it must seep into the property. If that is the case, the chances are good. However, you should obtain permission from the municipality. Many municipalities do not prohibit car washing on property, but do restrict it. For example, the car may often only be hosed down with clear water without the addition of cleaning agents, and engine washing is prohibited almost everywhere. The use of high-pressure cleaners for car care can also be prohibited.
