A Even if the tussle about the CO2-based vehicle tax is political Was theater par excellence, can be stated almost a year after its introduction: It has changed the offer. Review: In 2007, only around 20 cars remained below the limit of 120 g CO2 /km, and these were mainly small cars with lean engines.

The number of CO2-saving models is steadily increasing

Today, however, 163 models are on the list. The spectrum ranges from the sporty hybrid like the new Honda CR-Z to the spacious diesel station wagon like the VW Passat Blue Motion. The Smart Fortwo cdi remains the CO2 champion with only 86 g /km, the engine of which was converted to Euro 5 in 2009. On the gasoline side, the Toyota Prius Hybrid trumps with 89 g /km. The brother Auris Hybrid, which has been available to order since March, also emits only 89 g CO2 /km. The cheapest new car in Germany with CO2 emissions of a maximum of 120 g /km is the Nissan Pixo for 8,180 euros; Audi offers the only real convertible: the A3 1.6 TDI emits just 105 g /km. Other open cars: Smart Fortwo Cabrio and Fiat 500 C. Of the economical high-roof station wagons, only the Fiat Qubo is really recommendable. It is the only one of its kind that emits less than 120 g CO2 /km and is available with ESP.

Calculation of the vehicle tax is based on the standard consumption

Critics are now becoming Rightly complain that the calculation of the vehicle tax is based on standard fuel consumption, which has little to do with everyday fuel consumption. Nevertheless, in reality, fuel-saving techniques such as start-stop have led to lower consumption. In addition, the federal government wants to use a color scale similar to that of refrigerators to better identify the efficiency of new cars. The list of vehicles that emit a maximum of 120 g CO2 /km could, however, become shorter again from 2013. The EU is planning a more realistic cycle to determine the standard consumption. Nevertheless, nothing should change in the EU's fleet consumption targets for car manufacturers.

It is still open whether the calculation basis of the German vehicle tax will be adjusted. However, one thing seems clear: If you want to save on the maintenance of your vehicle in the future, you have to pay even more attention to fuel consumption.
