Classic car insurance: damage limitation

R we will write plain text. The insurance premiums for classic cars are much cheaper compared to the tariffs for everyday cars. A popular H license plate model can be insured for as little as 120 to 180 euros, depending on the provider, for example an Alfa Romeo Fastback Spider or a Mercedes 190b in the popular class for 15,000 euros, including partial coverage. There is no no-claims discount for this, and the premium is charged for a full year. Basically, the higher the vehicle value, the higher the premium. In comparison, a Jaguar XK 120 costs between 400 and 600 euros a year, a BMW 507 up to 2,000.

Partial insurance should be possible

Those who do without the sensible supplementary insurance, which includes glass damage, theft and damage caused by fire and vandalism, with the popular 15,000-euro models only pay 75 to 100 euros per year. So that the risk for the insurer is as low as possible, they set clear conditions: The owner must be over 40 years old and own an everyday car. The classic must be in a garage and may be moved a maximum of 5,000 kilometers per year.

For the price range around 15,000 euros, a current valuation report in short form from one of the recognized test centers is usually sufficient. Most insurers even accept the Motor Klassik Home-Check in cooperation with Classic-Car-Tax. Online at www.motor-klassik.de it is possible to evaluate the classic on the basis of detailed data and meaningful photos for 7.95 euros.

Despite the tempting basic tariffs for bare liability, you should start with a car value of 5,000 euros saddle up the partial coverage. Even the breakage of a windshield - often a procurement problem for inexpensive everyday classics like Peugeot 404 or Opel Rekord C - or a slashed top on a Triumph Spitfire or Fiat 850 Spider amortize the additional cover.

Insurance of the restoration value

The basic rule also applies that the amount of risk provision should be in relation to the value of the classic. Fully comprehensive coverage or an even more comprehensive all-risk insurance, such as that offered by Mannheimer, is particularly important for classic cars over 30,000 euros. For all those Porsche 911Mercedes 230 SL or Jaguar E-Type, which were also purchased as capital investments, are fully comprehensive. Rare cars from the fifties in particular, such as a Borgward Isabella Coupé, a DKW 3=6 Cabriolet or a keyhole captain from Opel, do not cover the cost of a full restoration in the event of a total write-off. Here, an insurance of the restoration value protects against a bitter loss of capital because they are undervalued.

Youngtimers from 1982 are the stepchildren of the insurance scene, cheap power limousines in poor condition are a deterrent. State 2 and a minimum value of 4,000 euros apply to most insurers as stricter conditions for the coveted special tariff.
