2 001 made its debut at the Rally Catalonia with the Xsara, the first World Rally Car (WRC) from Citroen. The Citroen World Rally Team achieved its first victory at the Rally France 2001. At the San Remo Rally, the junior world champion Sébastien Loeb strengthened the Citroen World Rally Team for the first time and went straight to second place.
The first The 2003 Citroen World Rally Team contested the full season with young star Loeb as well as Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae. At the end of the season, the team secured the brand world championship title. Until the farewell to Sebastien Loeb in 2013, a total of 8 constructors' trophies could be celebrated, even though they did not take part in the 2006 World Championships.
