K ompact SUVs are not always compact SUVs . This is particularly emphasized by the Citroën C4 Aircross, which immediately catches the eye with its unique design. Technically, however, it drives less the customization course, as it is closely related to the Mitsubishi ASX. We take the French version of the Japan SUV for the interior check - the Citoren C4 Aircross HDi 150 4WD. With the highest equipment variant 'Exclusive' it rolls up from 33,790 euros.

A leisurely jolting instead of a smooth rolling can be heard when the driver's seat is moved all the way back at the push of a button. What we have already learned in numerous interior checks: If you want to let electric motors work for seat adjustment, you sometimes need a little patience. As long as the same person is always behind the wheel, that doesn't matter, but as soon as two or more drivers have to readjust, it gets annoying. Let's not ride on it any longer, at some point the optimal seating position for the 1.60-meter lady will be found in the Citroën C4 Aircross and the 1.80-meter tall co-checker also finds nothing to complain about. There is nothing to complain about, especially in terms of space - everything feels very airy up here.

Sitting in the Citroën C4 Aircross, like in first class

We'll check right away whether that is at the expense the rear passengers go and climb one compartment further back. Very nice here, very generous and the backrest angle can even be adjusted in two stages - we sit as if we had booked first class. For once, anyone who takes a seat in the middle rear seat does not have to be satisfied with a simple belt strap: A belt system can be pulled out from under the paneling of the left C-pillar, which becomes a three-point belt with a click mechanism on the rear seat.

The panoramic glass roof provides an interior that is flooded with daylight, upon request and at an additional cost of 850 euros. We are looking for deep storage compartments, the inside of which will never get daylight. Nothing. The rear doors are slick and don't want to be bothered by toys, drinks bottles and other small items. All that remains in the rear of the Citroën C4 Aircross are the nets on the front seat backrests. Anything that doesn't fit has to be on the floor, seat or lap. Or passed on to the guests in the front seats. They have just enough door pockets, an average sizeGlove compartment and storage space under the armrest are available.

In an emergency, the odds and ends have to go to the rear compartment. There he can share 442 liters with larger luggage. But nothing should slip far back, otherwise trouser legs will be degraded to a cleaning rag for the rear apron. A spare wheel is housed under the load compartment cover from the medium equipment variant 'Tendance'.

It beeps and beeps and beeps and ...

We sit in 'Exclusive' and discover, in addition to the spare wheel, Xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, side skirts with chrome strips and parking beeps. Keyword 'beep': Some people are happy about the parking aid, others prefer to switch off the acoustic warning signals. The button is quickly found, on the left below the steering wheel. Because we get a real beeping concert in the Citroën C4 Aircross anyway. Ignition off, driver's door open, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. The on-board computer complains that the steering wheel lock is not engaged. We turn and jerk, at first emotionally, but at some point - annoyed by the beep sound - a little more energetically. 'Ah, now it's locked!' - 'How did you do this?' - 'No idea ...'

Now we are out of control and turn and press the three switches for the climate settings at random. The switches wobble a bit, you can also hear a creak every now and then - that doesn't really feel good. Maybe the Citroën C4 Aircross would be a rounder thing if it didn't look so elegant. That - and the price, which is not exactly low at 33,790 euros - gives rise to expectations that the compact SUV cannot quite meet.
